Returning player help

Hey guys, after a big break im itching to play again. Can I get some quick input on which version would be better to invest time. Heres the background

Ive played on-off since just prior to BC so having a bit of actual vanilla I kinda know get the concept of the grind and it being more of an event type of experience, For example I remember grinding out the materials for my very first epic pally mount just to do the run and have it glitch in the basement. After talking with a GM and saying aww man, better luck next time, your gonna love the speed. And that’s all that was said lol. No mats back. Yeah I understand. Anyway now that I think back, lots of events like that.

So that said, Im not interested in classic if it isn’t going to be maintained and updated. Im actually NOT a fan of blizzard having 2 projects. I kinda wish they would decide which direction they want to head and morph the game with all the content into the cloassic format if need be. Im kinda rambling, but what I mean to ask is will classic be the mainstream wow after a certain period with blizzard? or do they plan on keeping the 2 separate? Where is the playerbase now?

Ive played upto Legion, never tried BFA so that would be new. I never experienced the new storylines or warfront features.

I only have afew hours a night to invest so its Classic wow events and achievements vs the other long road (level 1 - BFA). Any input other than try both is appreciated
Thanks
Peace

Most of the people who tried Classic came back to retail within a couple weeks. IMO Retail is significantly better in almost all aspects and has an incredible amount more content. Retail is constantly evolving so any time invested pays off in the future. Classic is mostly static and doesn’t change. They do maintain it but nobody knows if they will ever expand it to BC.

That said, Classic is free and available with a sub so it’s worth trying. Most people enjoy leveling up. However, there is not a lot of end game content especially if you can’t get in raiding groups. I played classic for 10 days before coming back to retail. Did you read the Classic Section on these forums?

Thanks Anacrussys answers me dead on . I think I will concentrate retail for now and give it some time with the community

I don’t think classic vs retail is either/or. I play retail; raid, do mythic+ and other content (currently farming bee mount) but I’m also dabbling in classic for a couple of hours a week. I have no objective in classic other than to remember the things I enjoyed about it originally (primarily some of the old zones and some class specific things like hunter pet training). If you aren’t focussed on end game and accept it for what it is, it can be enjoyable.

Blizzcon is this weekend so we may hear more about Blizzard’s intentions about maintaining or progressing classic. Currently classic is working with no (or minimal) glitches (at least that’s been my experience). If you are curious you can try it for free and you don’t need to invest a lot into it if you don’t want to.

I’ve met a few people who decided to try classic even though they never played it… Seeing the world as it was pre-cata and the differences in skill system, is intriguing. I’m just waiting for the hype to all die down before dipping my toe in. The reality is that its different enough that it may as well count as a completely separate game.

They are rolling out some classic features and raids at later times. Beyond that I don’t think it has a road map, because the paying customers want it that way.

If you aren’t intrigued or pining for the good ol’ times, I wouldn’t bother with classic.

The story goes is that after Blizz’s Legal team shut down yet another illegal WoW classic server (there were many), someone gave them a petition signed by 250,000+ fans of the classic game asking them to provide their own officially supported and sanctioned classic server.

It was a huge “shut up and take my money” moment and 2 years later we got classic. According to some 3rd party game revenue tracking service, world of warcraft’s subscription revenue tripled in 1 month because of classic. It’s not going anywhere for now.
