Hi guys,
I just returned to wow and as I am leveling my boost druid here I am trying to decide on a main between Retribution Paladin and WW Monk. I have tried both in class trials in the follower instances, and honestly Paladin seems more fun, but it is horribly slow feeling for movement speed. Monk is not quite as fun but the mobility is much better.
In general I am pretty terrible at this game. Mostly endgame i want to d a lot of Regular Que PvP and some light raiding up to just clearing everything on normal.
I do tend to die, a lot, which is why I am choosing betwen two classes that can heal themselves. Does one have better survivability in pvp and pve than the other?
Has anyone played both and can give me their thoughts please?
Thanks,
-Matt
So as a main WW Monk I would say go Monk all day
But as a player giving advice to another, i need to say, if you’re new to the game or this is first alt, not as good as you would wanna be, you should try paladin first
Paladin pros
- Easy rotation, 2 generators, 2 spenders (one for ST, other for AoE)
- 30 sec cds, meaning you will hit hard every pack no matter what in m+
- community sees ret as an amazing dps, will get invites easly
- has brez
- low skill floor
- a lot of resources to learn since it’s a popular class
Cons
So in my opinion, you should play paladin, unless you wanna try something different, something that requires more knowledge to the game, since you need to learn when and why you wanna use cds, instead of paladin that just uses everything when they can, since 30sec cds is not even worth holding

That makes this a no brainer, then. Play ret. You could teach a literal chimpanzee to top parse as ret. WW is one of the hardest melee dps to play properly.

Easy answer is Paladin, they’re a significantly easier class to play. That said, as someone who only recently started playing monk on the side, I clicked with it really well, and that’s coming from a moron fury warrior. So I would personally say just level one of each, probably through time walking dungeons or something. By the time you get to 70 you’d get a feel of either classes rotations.
Alternate way of thinking, pick the one you like most thematically.
Unless the changes to class trees are significant to reduce the class wide utility of paladins (they do so many things and seem to have a button for almost everything,) then there is always going to be at least one paladin spec that is very good or even meta. Paladins also a lot tankier with plate armor, immunities, and “get out of jail free” cards. Monk requires much more precise play and can feel very punishing for mistakes compared to their paladin alternatives. It’s been a bit jarring to me to hear some poeple say the monk specs are some of the easiest to pick up and learn. Watched a youtube vid where the guy said MW was the easiest healer to play. I think what he means is that it has the simplest rotation, because higher in difficfulty you go MW is extremely hard to play well, because it lacks all the tools and utility that seemingly every other healer in the game has. Like there’s no “get out of jail free card,” bubble or wings or bop or lay hands or anything even close to it, so mistakes add up a lot faster to the point there is nothing you can even do. Paladin a lot more forgiving and versatile with lots to offer their team and survive themselves. Even in solo content I think Paladin will be easier for you than the monk experience.
Fun is subjective. Play what you like. That said, I’ve heard more people say they have fun with WW than any other spec.
WW is a bit more involved than ret. Ret is currently fotm, but I’ve beaten a lot of rets. Ret has more utility, but we can zoom faster.
if all you care about is it being easy, ret all day, there is no easier class other than maybe hunters.
if you want fun? monk, the mobility is top notch. also, in solo shuffle i believe there is no other class that dies less than monks statistically speaking, so if survivability is your goal monk is your choice. ret has defensives but cant port out like we can and doesnt have anywhere near our ability to escape.
