Returning Player Asking About Gearing (FFXIV vs WoW)

Hello! I raided in wow and quitted in MoP back then. Then I played some FFXIV last year and raided there too.

Now I have come back to try WoW again, subbing just to level in dungeons for nostalgia’s sake and have not purchased Shadowlands.

I have a family now and have much less time to raid compared to my WoTLK days…

I would like to ask how is the gearing up to raid casually in WoW?

In FFXIV , I just have to buy some BoEs, do some daily dungeons for catch up gear and I can raid the most recent raid.

What steps do I need to do to raid in WoW if I purchase Shadowlands?

Will it be grindy and take a long time for me to delve into raiding? Or is there a catch up system in place now?

… Just go back to FFXIV. You’ll spare yourself so much pain.

Even then, gearing here is an infinite treadmill and the entryway is lined with spikes and machineguns.

Usually one dungeon per week and then raid log.

Not much required if you have a chill raid team. Maybe not even a weekly dungeon!

If you dislike the infinite progression feel, you may consider trying Guild Wars 2. It is the exact opposite. You can get bis, quit for three years, and log back in to a bis character.

What does it mean to raid log?

So I can start when I reach lv 60? Wont i need some minimum gear before groups will take me in?

Thanks for the response!

I just came back after ~6-7 months off.

Gearing in wow has two streams:

  1. Premade/guild groups - in this instance getting carried through M+ or alt run raids will be the most efficient way.
  2. Solo and PUG - about as abysmal and punishing as it always was. Grind through the lower M+, LFR or ZM. Occasionally there will be a weekly event that gives a raid bit of loot. The RNG in wow is balanced that you play at least 10-20 hours a week any less than that you will not fill up the great vault slots and will get junk rewards and most likely you will not get loot dropping in M+. If you do not want to play wow at least 10-20 hours a week, the game is not really viable for a new player/non guilded player (beyond level up).

All my opinion and observations, everyone is free to have their own, also I do not PVP so that pillar is also excluded from my assessment.

So, “raid log” is like “raid then log out” meaning that there isn’t much other content required to sustain that gameplay.

You could meet the LFR requirement of 220 with auction house items and then do the current raid whenever you wish. Or, there are usually normal and heroic raid groups who might require one weekly mythic+ dungeon (or just that you show up).

There are less of those groups now because Shadowlands was very hard so many fell apart, and also because it’s the end of the tier and many guilds are done progressing.

So…

Reach level 60 => buy AH items => do LFR => M+ dungeons => normal raid=> heroic raids => M+ raids ?

Yes to all but M+ raids, which do not currently exist. (Unless you mean mythic raids, you should do those last)

You will probably interweave M+ dungeons and the normal/heroic raid when you get there for the best gear options. If you raid at the mythic level, you will probably be expected (by your group) to clear 1-4 mythic dungeons at the +15 or higher level every week.

I recommend you list your own level 2 dungeon instead of joining other people’s level 2 dungeon because you will be competing with high-geared characters who want valor. Or, even better, only do dungeons with friends!

Ahhh alright I am starting to get a better idea.

I will need a premade group for M+ dungeons and normal/heroic raids right? How much prog times do they take usually?

And are there no more tokens that can be used to buy gear from daily heroic dungeons like in Wotlk?

Thank you again for the answers!

Yes, that’s correct! Starting with mythic level 1, or base mythic, (called M0 for some confusing reason), and normal raids, there is not a queue.

LFR may take between one and four hours per wing, depending on how good your group is. The normal raid might take about five pulls (at most) per boss for a regular pug. Not because they will guarantee a kill in five pulls, but the group will fall apart at that point.

Not anymore, but there is a valor system so you can upgrade gear you get from Mythic dungeons.

I want to point out, don’t worry too much about gearing up right now. On August 2nd, season 4 will release and all item level rewards will increase by 26. Heroic dungeons will grant 249 gear and LFR will grant 265 gear in a few weeks.

Dear OP,
If you want to be successful in modern WoW, you must have the highest level gear possible. The best way to get this is via M+. To get your start in M+, just buy some tokens from Blizzard, and sell them on the ah for the gold. Then take that gold and buy the highest level gear you can find on the ah.

Doing this will get you geared enough to start M+ and soon, you’ll have all 278 gear.

Best of luck!

FFXIV has 100% better gearing them WoW. Here, your fighting RNG to get the gear you want with NO bad luck protection. Otherwise you have to spam M+ non stop all day everyday and hope to get loot from end dungeon chest.

Just like FFXIV savage/ultimate raids - depends on the people and how fast they learn and react. A ton of people cleared heroic early on and got AOTC. The guild I’m in got it tonight…multiple months later. Seasons last ~6ish months too so there’s a time limit. So to answer within a time frame, 1 to 6 months to do progression until the patch is done and next raid is out. No tokens to buy anything from heroic dungeons, its 100% rng - it either drops or it doesn’t. Welcome to RNG hell.

If you can fly go Zerith Mortis and loot every treasure chest you can find, easy loot and gear.

It either starts at 233 or 236 gear.

Be mindful of the stupid birds that you will aggro and will come out of nowhere.

Skip Korthia if you can. It’s not worth the trouble.

You still need to do Korthia opening area to unlock flying in the normal 4 zones.

Gearing is fairly easy at current

Ok so gearing is mainly RNG from M+ dungeons and normal/heroic raids if i gather from all the information here.

Which means i probably can delve into it without stress from the loot rng as i enjoy raiding. Loot will not be a priority just as long the process is fun and not grindy.

Oh but what is korthia and this thorgast thing i read about? I heard that they are grindy and will i need to do them to raid? (something about legendary i believe)

Do you even need alts in FF? I thought was the selling point of the game?

Wait you said ults, not alts. I really dont know the game so Im assuming its not a typo?
