How many of you after taking a break from the game find returning to where you left off to be an incredibly overwhelming experience?
I left around the start of DF, and even now only a few patches later there’s just an insane amount of things to catch up on. Honestly, too much content is not a bad thing in my eyes, if that is in fact what I’m returning to, but it can be daunting.
Do any of you have a good strategy on the best way to get reacquainted with the current state of the expansion and what to focus on?
If I had one suggestion for Blizz, it would be some kind of system that checks where you’re at after break, and give you a big fat “GO HERE TO CONTINUE WHERE YOU LEFT OFF” or “THIS IS WHAT YOU’VE DONE SO FAR” prompt.

World of Warcraft was pretty much founded on a system where players had to figure things out for themselves.
I’m not condoning this mindset I’m just saying that back in the day we had a good old thing called thoughtbot. You basically had to keep that website running simultaneously when you played the game. Why do I bring this up? For a newer player this is kind of what you have to do today but instead of that website it’s YouTube.
Mr.gm and a few others have some videos out that will help you get familiarized with 10.2 and what you should be doing. You can literally just search YouTube for something like “alll I need to know about 10.2”. Like I said there are a number of helpful videos out there but I would start there especially if you are a visual learner.
For all things World of Warcraft YouTube is pretty much your go-to nowadays

Well, if you left at the start, I would argue that you need to grind like the rest of us did.
If you don’t know where to start, check your quest log or the map.

Pretty much this and you will want to look for ! On your map. ! With a black border that indicates that it is part of the main story Quest and you will want to get all those done

at this point in the game, I don’t know how much I would spend “catching up”.
the emerald dream has just opened up and running those quests will give you more or less full 415 gear.
not only will it catch you up on gear, but this is where everyone is at the moment, so you will have help in all the group quests.
once you get your hands on the 415 gear, then you might choose to settle back into the DF story, if that is what you would like to do.
go to your quest log (L) and take a look at your story chapters. also look at the map and see which quests are completed already (the golden ?) and see if they lead you on.
but I would start with the new stuff. it gives you the best chance to stay current, especially if you want to run mythics and LFR next week.

I had a busy summer at work barely logging in and faced the same thing. There’s a lot more depth to the content compared to Shadowlands, which is a good thing, but it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the options available.
I’m not sure where you are in the story, but if you have Neltharion’s legacy quests in your log, follow them to get the achievement. Then take the quest Fire Season from Shandris to get the intro to the Emerald Dream and you’re caught up to current content and can go backfill whatever you want afterwards.

Note that you don’t need the entire Neltharion achievement for Pathfinder, just complete the story quests.

Your quest log should tell you what quest you need to do to start the storyline for each section. The quest markers themselves have a background and border and aren’t like the normal quest markers. As long as you’re doing quests that are marked as part of the main story, you’re doing something kinda right.

First off, don’t feel as if you have to rush to catch up with everyone else. It’s going to be a long season with plenty of time. Second, baby steps. Choose quests or an area and just work on small chunks at a time.

Clear your bags. Abandon all quests and then look at where the the quest log tells you to go to continue the story.
Take it a bite at a time and have fun.
