Ty yeah I haven’t played since Legion and pretty sure back then you had to buy new expac to get access to every previous one.

Oh, yes. All previous expansions are already free if you have a sub, which you do or you can’t post here.

They made everything old free with a sub. SL will probably be free with a sub once Dragonflight releases.

They started bundling old expansions with wod. I started playing at the end of mop, and prepurchased. At that time that was a new thing.

For a long time.

Vanilla, and every single past expansion is free with a subscription. They have been rolling the current sub into the base once the new one releases for the past few expansions.

well, yeah. The reason/fact it’s a promo deal doesn’t have anything to do with it feeling bad to just being a current player WoW. Then being passed over on free thing that could have been of use, because you were a current player.

You mean like the giant tree mount we all got for free during Shadowlands? Those players getting Shadowlands for free right now won’t have access to that.

They have given away expansions for over 10 years, including boosts.

All past expansions are currently free with a sub.

Example of them trying to get back past players with such an offer is the Scroll of Resurrection.

See this post from 2012 (it ran for many years and several expansions with diff terms).

And, to enable you and your friend to play together in Cataclysm’s newest content, any friend who accepts your Scroll will also receive the following epic benefits:

  • A single character immediately boosted all the way to level 80 – DING!

  • A FREE upgrade to Cataclysm – regardless of your friend’s original box level

  • An optional FREE character move – to your realm and faction so you can play together

  • 7 FREE days of game time – available immediately

Any active World of Warcraft non-trial player can send a Scroll of Resurrection. To be eligible to receive a Scroll of Resurrection, your friend must have previously purchased at least one month of game time at any point in the past, and your friend’s account must have been inactive since March 4, 2012 or earlier. A few other prerequisites apply – such as a free upgrade to a Battle.net account for players who haven’t played since 2009 or earlier – so be sure to check out the FAQ for full eligibility details.

The current offer is direct, not player involvement, Also no transfer or game time.

Normally, this is after the prepatch for the next expansion and all the AOTC and seasonal rewards for previous expansion have been made unobtainable. This move kind of has desperation written on it tbh. Just with how big of a nose dive SL numbers have taken, then it coming literally the day of FFXIV’s 6.2 prepatch maintenance.
