"Retribution Aura" is a Redundant PvP Talent, not an Aura

Agreed. I can’t believe this design made it through months of testing. It is the most ridiculously useless thing I have ever seen. There is no benefit to other people coming from an aura…what logic went behind such a decision?

While I am dumbfounded that it even made it this far, I have faith that it will be changed at some point during the expansion. If this happens, I hope to see one of the following options play out:

  1. Old school ret aura
  2. Old school sanctity aura
    (both are boring, practical options)
  3. Old school “conviction” talent with a benefit for the paladin to receive old school “vengeance” stacks. So it would look like this:

Retribution Aura:
Increases the chance for all party members within 40 yards to get a critical strike with all spells and attacks by 5%. Gives the paladin a 3% bonus to physical and holy damage you deal for 30 seconds after dealing a critical strike from a weapon swing, spell, or ability. This effect stacks up to 3 times.

This brings back a cool bonus to damage and visual effects that Rets had for many years while providing a role appropriate benefit to the group.

Great post! Excellent ideas. Can you post descriptions of the classic versions of Retribution Aura, Sanctity Aura and the Conviction Talent.

Why not have Retribution Aura be the original thorns it once was but instead reflects % of damage. Anywhere from 3-5% damage reflected will do.

This would also work really well with Aura Mastery to boost it further to say 15% - 20% damage reflect.

I can tell you that the wow devs have historically been very wary of percentanges, even low ones.

Yet Devo Aura has percentages anyways along with its functionality with Aura Mastery.

Retribution Aura was not for tanking. I found it very useful as holy (in BC) to level (when having to pay for spec changes), and in PvP against people who had high speed attacks (Rogue with two daggers).

This current Retribution Aura is completely useless. Maybe if it procced when LoH was used and/or BoP on another…

The current ret aura is not completely useless. It is highly situational, it works in unrated battlegrounds and possibly rated battlegrounds. It is useless everywhere else. There is a redundant pvp talent as mentioned in my OP Divenity called Ultimate Retribution. Therefore, the current ret aura is both largely useless and redundant.

Meeeehhh about the rbg one.

no, that’s a bad system; having to rely on crit chance to do more dmg is stupid and we should never have to go back to that for dmg.

He has a point, even in 194 PvP gear on SL Beta, ret crit is only 16%. Check this out

16% crit seems a bit low for mythic +3? quality gear.

Added, see OP.

I am suggesting the following

Talent:

Might of the Crusader
Retribution aura increases holy damage by 2% for the Paladin only.

But vengeance was up all the time…

Please explain.

No it was not, the only time we have tons of uptime on Vengeance was TBC & Wrath, and do you know why we had so much uptime on it? We had talents that you can put points in that makes it so X spell can drastically crit more; and guess what, we don’t have such a system in place anymore.

TBC & Wrath Ret Tree had these Talents

  • Sanctified Seals
  • Increases your chance to critically hit with all spells and melee attacks by 1/2/3%.
  • Fanaticism (3 ranks)
  • Increases the critical strike chance of all Judgements capable of a critical hit by 6/12/18% and reduces threat caused by all actions by 10/20/30% except when under the effects of Righteous Fury.

At max, that’s an extra 21% chance to crit with judgment & that is not including your character’s crit chances based on gear & lvl. Something that isn’t even possible to do unless blizz makes it so Ret’s judgement has a 20%-30% crit chances into its spell like Holy Shock for holy.

thats too weak as a talent to waste it as a choice, if blizz is going to do anything aura related for talent it should be something similar to what I suggested where it affects all auras & not just 1.

Depends, what stats were you trying to stack? If your gear doesn’t have much crit on it… you wont have much crit.

Good point. Versatility is the most common stat on the SL starter pvp gear. That said, my SL beta enhancement shaman has over 20% crit in equivalent SL pvp gear.

The talent could also be a conduit.

First we need a viable retribution Aura that actually is an aura which current ret aura is not. Specifically, we need an aura that affects all raid and party members within 40 yards which the current ret aura does not.

I like the idea of combining the classic/vanilla ret aura and sanctity aura with talents.

WoW devs,

We have broad consensus in the Paladin community that ret aura needs to change. And we have some great ideas on how it should change. I see no reason not to move forward.

Please respond.
