Retail WoW is unrecognizable

like most people, I haven’t played retail WoW since classic got released in 2019. I recently redownloaded the retail client and logged back in for the first time since then. The game is unrecognizable to the point where it seems like a joke.

They’ve changed the iconic UI, my server is dead, all of my old gear and gold is useless, the entire world is adjusted to my level (what’s the point?), and countless other things either delegitimized or changed.

My main question is how does blizzard justify spending money hosting servers for this game anymore. Who is playing this?

When will they come out with WoW 2 or another game worth playing again? It’s been nearly 20 years since blizzard has made a popular and successful game other than the release of classic WoW in 2019 (which was a re-release of a 2004 game)

You started with a huge fallacy here. Nothing good out of your topic is worth wasting time reading.

Most people are playing Dragonflight. Most people were playing shadowlands.
The Classic population were quite small compared to Retail and that information was always visible throgh Ironforge Pro.

shadowlands isn’t even in the same category as original WoW. It’s a different genre and it would be insulting to compare the two. WoW was an MMORPG and retail is a software designed to collect microtransactions.

Is not even the current expac, lol this guy.

LOL not even close. ironforge pro only collects data from players with an addon installed. I find it hard to believe that shadowlands gets even 10% of the peak players of classic.

It’s nice we have options. I enjoy both

shadlowlands, bfa, whatever. it’s the same crap repackaged every 1.5 years.

Shadowlands is not the current expansion, so I suspect most people have moved on to Dragonflight now.

But hey, you do you.

yeah if you like roleplay or play for the story then retail is fine. My point is that for the actual audience that enjoys MMORPGs WoW is unrecognizable in it’s current state. It’s turned into a piece of software simply to collect money from the remaining people playing it.

Yes, classic WoW was a success but that’s an old game that’s been re-released and it’s still more popular than modern WoW. That’s my point.

It’s unrecognizable because it’s more player friendly than og classic.

Classic is such a tedious game. I started in wrath and it’s hard for me to go back and play classic servers because of how boring rotations are.
I couldn’t get into vanilla or bc classic because it was even worse. Don’t roll xyz classes because you’ll have a literal 1 button rotation because the other spells aren’t worth the mana to damage ratio.

And that’s just one aspect that is a pretty big turn off.

One part is true, the other is completely false.
Classic is pretty successful as being a call back and a major nostalgia hit. But… as far as it being more popular than retail, that is entirely false.
Classic servers may have 10k+ active players, where as retail has hundreds of thousands daily.

wat? this is the exact opposite of what is true.

based on this alone I can tell you’ve probably never touched classic.

retail is one of the most complicated games i’ve ever seen which is exactly what prompted this post

You have to save up your money to buy skills.
You have to walk literally every where, mounts aren’t available until much later.
Leveling takes an absurdly long time.
Auto attack is more often than not your most used ‘ability’.

Just 4 off the top of my head.

Just wait until you see starfields control scheme.
And if that’s too much for you, good news. You can stay on classic.

Personally, I don’t enjoy an overly simplified way of life such as classic.

I play a lot of games.

retail is 100% one of the most overly complicated games with content stacked on itself for every expansion pack, DLC, and battlepass that blizzard comes up with. It’s very unfriendly to new players. It lacks clear goals/objectives. It has thousands of dress up outfits/mounts you can collect. the entire thing is a disaster and makes the game very complicated.

This is the result of blizzard milking this game for money for 20 years instead of letting actual game enjoyers develop the game as they did with classic.
