who does or doesn’t enjoy the near 90 actions per minute it takes to play ret
personally i liked when it was near 40-50 and your spenders felt like thay did x2/x4 the dmg they do now

The lowest the global cooldown can be is 0.75 seconds. There’s nothing in the rotation that’s off the GCD except Lay on Hands in a pinch, Divine Protection, Divine Steed, or possible Hand of Reckoning if you need to off-taunt [Edit - Avenging Wrath]. So that’s at most 85 actions in a minute. If you want less global cooldowns, you’re free to spec into less haste. At 50% haste, this will fall to 65.
The benefit of swapping out Haste for Verse/Crit/Mastery is that each hit will feel a bit harder. You’ll just have less holy power gen per minute.
If you play Prot, you get to include Shield of the Righteous off the GCD to count APM. But generally you put this on a button to just spam indiscriminately, so I wouldn’t equate high APM to the rate at which you have to make decisions.
Coming in hot with the receipts to lay down some truths.
Doing away with clown takes of 90 APM.
That’s a community service if I ever saw one.
The pacing of the current ret rotation feels nice, nicer than it has ever felt tbh.
Ret, more than almost any other class, gives you major opportunity to tailor your actions per minute to your preference. Blade of Justice and Judgment can both be talented to use one charge rather than two. Crusader Strike can be talented away completely and baked into your auto attack.
None of this really affects APM much on its own. The best way to lower APM is to minimize haste and you will still be GCD locked 99% of the time. Higher haste can actually free up the odd GCD at the cost of increased APM.
Ret does have considerable freedom in types of builds. One subtle advantage for Ret is the increased range on many abilities. As a warrior or monk you may spam buttons between GCDs trying to make sure you get that Execute or ToD off before you or your target move out of range for the ability. This is essentially a non-issue for Ret as you rarely stand at your max range, making ret feel far more responsive than other melees.
At the cost of feeling like you are not a paladin.
80+% of our kit should not be ranged. Espaicially our spenders.
The original reason why we had ranged was to use them to finish off stragglers trying to run away, not to make things “smooth”. If we needed more smoothness, we should had gotten a gap closer.
Oh yes it was so much fun auto attacking while waiting for spells to come off CD as a melee, HARD PASS.
I like the range and I think it’s better than being hard stuck on the mobs back. I think the variety is really good, DKs can bring mobs to them, Rogues move quickly around and have some range extension, DH/War just go to the mobs, Feral/Enhance are just kind of weird.
Problem is, can we really classify paladins as melee if about all of our kit is ranged?
Are we even paladins (holy knights) at that point or just priests in plate that sometimes auto attacks.
Nah the current iteration of paladin is great, If you want what you are suggesting go play Warrior or Dk.
Funny thing is, they are re-looking at range extenders on melee classes as is, due to how inconsistant they are.
Also we are holy “WARRIORS” so in a way I am already playing a warrior
If you want to play a ranged class, there is plenty to choose form as is, no need to turn a melee one to a ranged class.
Of course you are going to get all the barely-capable-of-achieving -anything paladins coming in defending the fact that they should be a ranged class that is tailored to COD playing 15 year olds or people who cant comprehend any rotation outside of button mashing 3 keys whenever they come off CD. Good thing there is an immunity button built in for when times get really hard.
I mean if they wanted to play a ranged class, they got these available to play as;
Warlock, hunter, priest, mage, evoker, druids, shamans.
That is more then half the class selection they can choose from for a ranged playstyle. No need to change ret’s into range at all.
If you’re playing Crusading Strikes, the auto attacks count toward APM while you’re not actually pressing a button. It’s probably way closer to 50 apm than 90
Just like Fury, but they’re likely a bit higher with the reduced gcd on certain abilities. And I think Rampage counts with every hit.
Eh, I don’t plan on using strikes. If i do group content, i like the idea of benefitting from my allies buffs. (It don’t benefit from windfury)
Though it does look like they are buffing templar strikes.
Although seeing both our hero talents baking haste in it does make me a bit nervous.
When I choose Ret Paladin, I thought it would be a bit “chiller” than Fury or Windwalker which I was previously playing, but hell, how was I wrong.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining, playing Ret for me I feel like a powerhouse Raid leader and this was something I was missing in those two classes above.
I have SO MANY things to do, I’m pressing buttons all the time, more than Warrior. Fury got me bored because I was a maniac just doing DPS, as for Ret Paladin, you can be SO usefull.
Someone Dying, you have 3 heals. Healer being focused, you have 2 blessings, mobs are casting, you have AOE interrupt, gonna soak big damage, press 30% damage reduction, is it on CD and low health? Have a shield that heals you. All of this while keeping DPS.
Plus the animations are way nicer than the other classes Ive played, you hit, you feel like you hit, way different than windwalker for example (Fury was also nice in this matter).
Man, I’m loving playing Ret. Fyrakk Heroic the other day was a decisive moment that made me realize why I picked Ret Paladin.
Saving arses while being top 10 DPS is really rewarding, at least for me.
As for my hand, well, I will tell you in a couple of months how healthy it is =O
