Ret pally and Aura Mastery

Apologies if this has been answered somewhere, but I couldn’t find any specific information. I’m a n00b to ret and debating whether to spec into Aura Mastery. Based on the tooltip it seems really lackluster - perhaps only useful when you need extra spell resistance on a boss mechanic. But even with that, it only lasts 6 seconds.

Does anyone know if this ability actually increases our dps? And if so, how and when to use it for that purpose?

It doesn’t, but the 5 points in seals of the pure does and you can’t pick up divine sacrifice and all 5.

For resist based checks that’re covered by paladin auras the damage reduction is only marginally worse than divine sacrifice.

Great, thank you - that answers my question! So there’s no real major use for Aura Mastery and people only take it because of lack of talent points to get Divine Guardian when you max out Seals of the Pure

Its a decent defensive cooldown, but yeah, it’s just somewhere to sink excess points.

Did you read the part where he said it was only marginally worse than Divine Guardian for spell damage?

Yup! But I’d rather take Divine Guardian if Aura Mastery does not grant any DPS benefit. I re-worked my spec so that I can get that and 3/5 in Seals of the Pure.

Okay, fine, that’s probably better for your raid overall anyway. I just thought the initial purpose of the question was about your personal dps, in which case AM grants almost as useful a raid cooldown without costing you dps like DG does.

Hey, you can totally AM retribution aura for added DPS on like… Marrowgar bonestorm

You can, but it wont be counted as your dps :stuck_out_tongue:

The hits on you will!

The difference is that you can get your full damage potential as a Ret with the Aura Mastery Spec, and you don’t get that with the Dsac Spec.

Also, the AM Spec is very useful. To give just a few examples, you can use it to avoid the silence by with the spinning chicks on Jaraxuss. You can use it when Burning Bile is sent out on Beasts. You can use it on Twins to help your soakers stay alive (depending on how you do the fight). You can use it on Anub when Penetrating Colds are tossed out.

To say it “just adds a little resistance,” isn’t really accurate. If used well, it can be a very helpful raid tool on a lot of fights, and again, you always lose personal DPS as the Dsac build, you don’t as AM.

Edit: I guess I misunderstood your question after reading it again. No, AM doesn’t give you any noticeable DPS increase. It is quite good though.

Side bonus to the AM route:

Improved lay on hands is in reach as well, which is great for more single target damage bosses.

For damage, 5/5/x (the rest in ret). But at 80 in raids or whatever you’d better have either aura mastery or dsac.

Aura Mastery is effectively a raid-wide damage reduction CD against spell damage. It’s very useful.

Every point you take out of Seals of the Pure is roughly a 1% dps loss. So by not taking the AM spec with 5/5 Seal of the Pure you are just griefing your own dps. I main ret and I would only play the divine guardian spec if my raid leader held a g*n to my head (in minecraft) demanding I do it

AM devo can be used in a pinch as well, not to mention the utility of AM concentration aura.

Divine Sacrifice with it’s talents is still strictly speaking better damage reduction but…
