Ret Paladins viability in Classic

Hello. I just wanted to know to what extent Ret Paladins can be used in. I can always go Holy since Ive healed in BC, but was just curious as to what specific things about Ret are we okay or bad in so I can get a frame of reference.

Are we acceptable at doing dungeons? – Haven’t anything one way or the other. Havent been denied any groups so far, but occasionally see the lolret comment, so just want to make sure if Im breaking a taboo or not while in a dungeon

Are we acceptable at doing Raids? – Im almost positive the answer has been no in the places Ive looked. Guess what Im most curious is to what aspect that makes us to lacking compared to everybody else. Is it a mana issue? Is it a dps issue? Is it something else?

Are we acceptable at PVP? – Surprisingly I heard that we are slightly better than average at PVP? Or maybe just dueling? Not sure.

But yeah figured Id ask you guys since I trust you more than my me. Thanks again for the clarity

Stop trying to make Fetch happen!

Seriously though, Ret is not great, but if you are in a guild who is not super min maxing, you may get slot.

Ret paladins are fine in dungeons.

They are at the bottom of the dps list in raids. Some lower raids will allow them because filling 40 bodies is more important than waiting for perfectly optimal stat builds.

They are good in pvp because their damage is 100% burst, making it hard to deal with. Plus their plate armor and self healing makes them hard to take down quickly.

Edit: and on the topic of pvp, they provide strong support for other players through blessing of freedom, healing, and blessing of protection.

Ret Paladins are PvP gods. They have basically every useful utility in the book (Hammer of Wrath, Blessing of Freedom, etc) and multiple “you can’t kill me right now” buttons that make you almost impossible to kill 1v1 (even 2v1 can be hard against a Ret pally).

I got into Dungeons (even at level 60) all the time. Your utility as a spot healer/wipe preventer/buff boy/adequate DPS can be extremely useful to 5 and 10 man groups.

Really, the biggest issue with Raids is sustained DPS. Since you rely on Seal of Command for your primary damage output, having that left to chance really can be problematic to damage output in general.

In what planet is a Ret paladin a PvP god? Right now mages and rogues dominate almost everything 1v1 or world PvP. If you’re talking about organized PvP, then priest and shamans can just dispel/purge all Paladin buffs and seals (e.g. Seal of Command).

In groups, Ret paladin bring some utility (if you don’t have a Holy Paladin), but frankly, almost every other class has way more damage and staying power (except against UD).

I hope Blizzard is open to having some balance changes to the future of Classic and not just keep it stale.

Holy Paladins are basically broken in PvE, this is the primary reason Ret isn’t used. DPS are dime a dozen, broken healers are not. At least early on.

For PvP ret paladin is a lot better than people give it credit for, especially if you use engineering. You basically wipe out ret’s weaknesses when you use that profession.

Paladin healers are ok in PvP but Priest healers are better due to also having a purge on a faction that doesn’t have shamans. But Pally healer doesn’t get dumpstered by Viper sting either, so there’s that.

Name one DPS-oriented spec that has less DPS than Retribution normalized to gear level. If Retribution had top 3 single target and AoE damage, then people would use them, regardless of how ‘broken’ Holy Paladin is. The fact of the matter is they’re not just a dime/dozen DPS, they’re bottom of the barrel.

I wasn’t aware that there was an engineering item that prevent paladin blessings and seals from being purged.

We had a ret pally in our guild back in Vanilla. He was holy until he had his full T2. That set has just enough str, they can swing their sword decent enough, but enough other stats to let them use their magic which is where they shine. Kind of a holy spell Rey, shockadin type of deal. With his T2 and some AQ40 stuff, he was a freaking beast in Naxx. We’re talking near top of the charts.

Full disclaimer, I was a hunter in my own little world. I know nothing about his setup or what his stat allocation was. I think a motivated person could make it happen, but as best I can recall, it was a LOT of work!

So you are agreeing with me mostly. Just because they aren’t a top dps, doesn’t mean they are 100% useless as a dps. This mindset is frustrating at best. Holy Paladin just fits their role too well to be replaced for DPS, even if they were a top dps.

Someone sounds salty. You could say the same things about a rogue with dots on them or a priest with viper sting ticking on them…sometimes certain classes have crap they can’t deal with. If they had no weaknesses, EVERYONE would play it and it would be broken and perfect and the game would be garbage.

Ret Pallies are really good up until lvl 59… At lvl 60 they turn bad…

Lolret.

I recommend Esfand’s channel.

Paladin builds are more diverse than some of the one-build-one-answer responses given here.

Anything is viable, as in possible, so by rolling Ret, you are the answer to your journey.

I love Pally because I look tinkering with situational adjustments, but the rest of the group, especially a PUG will likely expect you to be Holy.

Play what you want, I say, and surround yourself with friends who will support the build you like to play. Is that viable? Yeah.

Dungeon PvE, they’re okay.
Raid PvE, they’re below average.
PvP, they can wreck.

I am an advocate for playing what you want. This is a game that afflicts people with the “alt-itis” and most casuals struggle with sticking with a class to end game.

Ret shouldn’t be excluded just because they aren’t the best. Blame the player not the game.

In my world. Tell that to all the mages and rogues (among others), at or above my level, that I rip apart in world pvp.

The retribution tree is a myth. I don’t believe in it.

By that logic, you could bring in a DPS holy paladin to fill your last slot.

Yes and no. All classes should have general weaknesses. I hate homogenization. But we’re literally talking about having the whole Retribution class being demolished with dispel/purge.

The priest buddies with a druid/paladin and the viper sting goes away.
The rogue buddies with a druid/paladin and most of the dot’s goes away.

Tell me what Retribution has to protect them against seals being removed? You’re literally just auto-attacking.
