Look at all the paladins in lore, Arthas Uther Tyrion Bolavar are all ret paladins, not a single one wears a dress. A Ret paladin is who broke frostmourn and single handedly led to the lich kings defeat!

Lore figures don’t exactly have a spec. And have you forgotten tier 10 is a dress?
I dunno, all their paladins seem to be good at either becoming crazy or getting murdered.
For the love of god just don’t tank on ret plz 
You do realize that if they’re ret paladins, that basic communication might be a little outside their grasp?

Yet none are warriors of battle.
Ret is the spec of the complainer. The class fantasy of not working with a team, refusing to help others, selfishly using any utility and taking gear from those who could benefit others with it more.
Paladin is indeed a Hero class. They are paragons of righteousness, who spend their days helping the poor and destitute, healing the sick. They are the shields that stand before the dark, the watchers at the rim, and when the forces of darkness and deceit come calling, a Paladin’s righteous fury will see them smote in a singularly dreadful blow of fire and ash and light, of shining steel and might.
Notice, however, that this is a terrible way to do DPS. Better to strike a foe thousands of times in a rain of blows somewhat less devastating individually than to strike once and be unable to fell the foe.
This is why, in times of War, we turn to the soldiers.

Ret can be a great support class in pvp, and do huge burst.
But in almost all circumstances it is usually easier to be more effective as a holy pally.

With 4 stacks, I believe they have the highest burst potential in the game for a single hit.

Not this expansion. Warriors are the hero class and you could argue so are mages.
TBC is the paladin ERA
Not even kidding when I tell you I have globaled a few mages with my healing 1 hander (40DPS). You may think its impossible but I assure you it is very possible. This character only has 750 attack power, but i play him as a true hybrid mostly healing, peeling, cleanse, freedom, when I have good High quality melee and casters near by. I break out the 2 hand when it’s needed and make good use of it.
Hunter pets, rogues, ferals and most fury warriors I ignore letting them build my burst so that I can eliminate their friends. It is BiS.
soc/parry/benediction are the best tanking talents :P.
2h soc prot pally can tank all of nax. assuming your guild is not too casual enough to keep 18 wars from joining up
