I know this is a hot topic considering how bad some other classes are performing currently, and asking for a buff on a “balanced” class is tilting for those people. Hear me out.
While ret is some what decent at the moment I worry about the future for raiding. Now that hunter can bring kings what will be the point of bringing a ret considering most raids will want a holy/prot paladin regarding their current kits. Between those 3 specs all important pally buffs are covered. Our damage is very meh and depends entirely on command procs or crits. While that is fun while it works for 10% of the time the other 90% of the time feels very underwhelming. Some under performing classes at the moment are only under performing because they do not have access to talents that unlock their potential and will have a huge spike at 40/50/60 brackets. While ret gets very little from talents and scale with gear poorly.
While I think mana is an issue for longer fights I do not think that is the problem entirely considering with bis gear I get through entire fights now without mana issues and damage is still sub par compared to other melee. I feel like ret in most expansions have crutched wings to stay relevant in dps and still have fell short most expansions out side of burst windows. Without wings we are left with burst only relying on crits and outside of that we have no damage windows. This is not a plea for wings or for paladins to receive some sort of game breaking damage buffs. The sole purpose of this thread is to shed light on the identity crisis of ret paladin and its core purpose. What could we get rune/buff wise to improve dps/utility and remove rng aspects while also giving a reason to bring one to a raid in the future seeing as now we don’t need them for blessings or damage going forward or into endgame content. All suggestions are welcome and would love to hear some ideas from other ret players out there. Hopefully the devs will see this and provide us with something to keep the ret dream alive.
My SOD character name is Tot on lone wolf for those of you interested in looking at logs to see that I have solid parses and have played the class long enough to have some creditability on this issue.

as the 3rd highest class/spec currently (on average) with DPS and since its really based off our crits that won’t change unless they nerf us into the ground Ret will be wanted in any raid just for their Melee DPS (along with the Utility they bring).

We will certainly need some love along with shamans
People are going to flame you and say we got every rune.
Well, we got every rune and peak in lower levels and are still getting outscaled, lol.
Seal of command just sucks and martyr competes with divine storm for a rune spot. Martyr feels so good to use and actually brings utility.
Also, we are reliant on crits even for our steroid and in PvP this double dip nerfs us
Hopefully the balance team will treat us well by phase 2.

Yeah I know I would get flamed from other classes because from the outside it looks like we are in a very good spot. Truthfully once you play one you realize the downsides and it looks pretty grim. I think some of the nerfs we received before the game came out were unjust. Like the cd to crusader from 4 to 6 seconds would be a nice spike for us.
I totally agree. Moving the maryr rune to maybe the exorcism rune slot would be better. Running martyr and DS would give us more consistent damage without having to rely on command procs and also brings a source of replenish for the raid.

It’s funny… I have no idea when it became a hot topic, but I’ve seen at least 2 posts about ret paladins in the past week or so!
Maybe. I wonder if Phase 1 will historically go down as the time when the performance of some particular specs for some classes shined brighter than it may in later phases.
I’m particularly curious if we’ll see an over-saturation of hunters going forward, that may have difficulty finding raid spots, particularly with how pug friendly the current phase has been. Next phase may well be too though.
Is Divine Storm something you would care about on a single target fight? I haven’t really been playing my paladin this phase. Was waiting for next phase, when I am guessing they’ll sort of come-online as very strong PVP healers.
I guess it depends on what you’re hoping for in terms of “balance,” and of course it what actually happens next phase! It will definitely be interesting to see where we go from here.

The hot topic is that paladins need a nerf.

The only thing Ret needs right now is for CS/DS to be able to trigger procs like other melee abilities on MDPS do. That will make them competitive, while leaving them well short of Warrior tier DPS, which they shouldn’t be at and don’t need to be to justify a raid slot as DPS.
We have no way of knowing how later phases will shake out. Paladin would need some beastly runes to keep pace with the talents and abilities other classes unlock in the next phase.
Horde trolls are just sad. Run along now, little crab.

You’ll put on the dress. You’ll buff might and salv. You’ll be happy that you had something warriors need, and still get a raid invite.

oh don’t worry. I’m sure ret paladins will always have a spot in the raid. Why, I think they’ll be the belle of the ball

There’s a dress waiting for you at 60 if you want gear.

paladins are in a good spot. gear some int (even as ret) and use SoM with a more supportive mindset instead of a parsing mindset. spamming crusader strike on cooldown makes mana a non issue so im not sure what the problem is
Careful. Karma is a beast, and Warrior just might end up with nothing but healing and buff runes in the rest of the phases that leave them pulling up the rear on DPS. You might be wearing a pretty pink dress.
The mana regen from CS and SoM are nothing.
Are warrior posters trying to challenge hunters for the title of stupidest class?

This is a warrior comment for sure. Obviously you have not played a paladin past lvl 10.
You’re just spamming DS, SoC and judgement on cooldown to get leet individual parses which is why you think mana is an issue
Become a true paladin and support your team instead…
Give us 4% mana return on crusader atrike. What do you think?
