As the title asks, Ret or Prot for a main? I typically only focus on one character as I play since my time is limited and the nagging question has bubbled to the surface. I have played as a Ret up this point (ilvl 613) and I have enjoyed the experience for what it is worth. I play a broad range of content, mostly PvE, questing, delves, and dungeons. I do a pug raid once a week or so and I’ll do the weekly PvP stuff. Nothing crazy, and nothing hyper focused. What is community’s opinion in this? As an overall experience, what is more enjoyable between the two?
Prot easily.
Dps are a dime-a-dozen, especially ret. Competition can be fierce.
But there’s a premium on tanks. Far easier to get into keys because people are always looking for a tank. And Prot seems to be in a good place now.
Prot is cool, because it’s an unusual experience compared to playing a dps all the time. You can aggro more, slowly burn big packs down. But for me, it’s a more of a novelty, because I can’t really enjoy PvP this way, and I don’t always want to tank PvE content. But if you don’t mind tanking, and don’t do much PvP, then I imagine prot can be a rewarding experience.
Ret will mostly be more enjoyable. It’s roughly middle of the pack in most content (your AoE burst is what makes you somewhat useful still) but single target is still hurting bad. The rotation is easily and the CDs easily make us self sustainable (I hardly require external heals. It’s perfect for more casual gameplay in most cases (you’ll still be invited into heroic raids but may find pushing m+ dungeons beyond 5 challenging)
My recommendation if you’re open to it is to do what I’m doing with this alt. Push all 3 specs and see which one you enjoy most. Most likely since I have experience Tanking and DPSing on a Paladin, I’ll switch roles situationally and never have to worry about being rejected much
