Ret can be a contender if they made some basic changes.
1-) Blessing of Freedom needs to have two charges (or give Emancipation back)
2-) Eternal Flame (word of glory upgrade) needs to add a 10-20% (maybe allow it to stack to a max of 20% after multiple applications) damage reduction as well as the minor heal over time or maybe replace the heal over time with damage reduction.
3-) Templars Verdict needs a damage buff by about 20% to increase our single target threat.
Reasoning:
1-) The reason we need double freedom again is simple. Too many snares in this game that drop you to 20-10% movement speed to where you’re just standing there trying to get away or advance, and often these abilities are spammable by multiple classes. 1 Freedom isn’t enough to deal with it. (Or give Emancipation back)
2-) The reason for damage reduction on our Eternal Flame is simple. Rets ONLY true defense is our self healing (word of glory/eternal flame upgrade) which is fine in BGs, but add Dampening in the Arena and our survival is a joke. We need damage reduction not just heals, and we must trade damage for that defense which is something no other class must deal with, so our defensive heal should give us damage reduction so we can survive like any other class in dampening matches.
3-) Lastly our single target damage (and bust damage) does need some help. Our Templars Verdict should hit like a truck considering it requires a ramp up, and we have to choose between the damage and our self protection through healing with Eternal Flame (word of glory). Templars Verdict simply needs a buff.
Do those 3 things and nothing else and Ret would be A tier in the arena.

All good and all and what about templar. Because herald is alrrady the go to spec for all content. The last thinf it needs is buffs
easiest fix would be to just have hammer of light cost 4 CP and replace FV for x seconds after WoA
replacing WoA is weird and at 5 CP cost it’s straight up cumbersome
Yes. FV is extremely weak single target damage. It needs a serious buff. Its a spender that does less damage than our builders. No other class had to deal with that.
Also, its crazy how hunters can heal themselves better than paladins…
Eternal flame needs a massive buff. No other class has to trade their dps for self heals. It literally needs to do 250% more and also give a temporary damage reduction.
If a ele sham or spriest stopped dpsing and started healing, they can top off their team mates in 3 casts. Paladins have to cast 10+ flashes or like 8 EFs to top someone off.

Freedom needs to be better overall.
Our mobility is bad, and positioning can be one of the most important things in arenas and for completing objectives in BGs. Add to this that Blizz has gone overboard giving out too many movement impairing effects, knocks, grips, and ground effects.
Something has to be done
Its either more charges, shorter CD, both… or you can just make the damn spell better
Should it get stolen? Nope
Should you be able to be gripped while freedom is up? Nope
Knocked? Nope
Freedom just hasn’t kept up with the number of other things the devs have put into the game. Make it better, or yeah, I guess more charges or shorter CD if we have to keep this version that hasn’t kept up with the game.
While we are on the subject, I want to talk about consecrate too.
So, some enemy player drops a big nasty evil pile of goo on the ground, basically defiling the area. Our paladin hero with the power of the light comes along and “consecrates” the same ground?
What happens to that defiled area?
nothing
What should happen?
IMO the consecrate should hard counter ground effects
It just shows that devs don’t play or understand our class. There are ways to help us that fit with our class theme, that would help bolster one of the main weaknesses they have given our class. However, instead we are going into the 20th anniversary with some of the same weak spells that maybe made sense 15 years ago but haven’t kept up with the power creep they have given the other classes in that time.
We where way worse 15 years ago too…
so if thing was once bad or worse , thing now is fixed?
its like saying yeah my roof had massive holes, now it only has medium holes.
I like how they gutted judgement dispels when ret was op then as the spec dropped nothing was returned. I think wog as ret should at least dispel something, maybe a pvp talent, but if it takes 1/3 slot then it’d have to be more powerful, maybe a choice node with cleanse toxins where now your wog dispels magic, poison and disease on cast.
Justicars vengeance should be a 5 hp spender, or maybe even 4, still have it slightly behind FV for sustain output but for burst with divine purpose and wake it should be viable as the higher 10~ second burst option, especially if you can sequence it in a stun window. Leaving it as 3hp just makes it a dead talent with no niche.
Divine arbiter should proc seraphim, its a predictable proc which creates a window of opportunity for additional damage, yeah in pvp its predictable but with how rets damage profile is the shortest cd of all specs if you’re directly countering the 30s windows on ret you’re going to fall off in watching their partners.
