Ret DPS Rotation is... Terrible?

I think Empyrean Power trait fixed some downtime issues. I wouldn’t mind reducing cooldown of Judgment or Crusader Strike additionally.

It’d be nice if there was some gimmick to track, like Final Verdict buff to Divine Storm from WoD. Or seals to switch at certain targets breakpoint. Or projecting Divine Storm from Legion so that you would think about positioning to make the most use of spell path. AoE generator from MoP/WoD would also be great, which would require some decision making when to switch to it.

Yeah, gross.

Thank The Light you explained this so I didn’t have to. The OPs original issues are something I’ve not experienced at all.
If you want to look at me for raid experience and such my main toon at the start of this expac was Uthemgas a DK

It honestly sounds like you need more haste. I’m at 22% roughly and I don’t have much downtime at all. Maybe I’m just using abilities better and not overcapping Holy power.

Yea, I’ve 18% haste and I still find dead space. What I have found is that if I modify part of my dps rotation to make sure i’m always leaving up what will generate 3 HP then I’m gucci.

There’s always utility stuff but that hurts the DPS output. It just seems bursty rather than the smooth succession of damaging abilities that you should have. Might need a bit more haste but I don’t know if it will make that much of a difference at this point

Haste will help definitely, however, outside of Crusade/AW we slow way down. If youre not careful and your overcapping HP then you slow yourself down more.

Azerite traits help with this but that doesn’t address the main issue. Like EP is fun (and amazing in situations) but it’s an RNG proc.

A ton of stuff in the game is RNG. Reacting to the unpredictable is part of the “skill gap.”
Elemental can be a lightning bolt wasteland (I spam roll the mouse wheel. Super exciting) when lava burst doesn’t proc.

Point being that relying on a proc doesn’t make ret unique by any means. Personally I find I only really have dead zones with unusually bad luck or when I screw up and overcap HP.

I’m finding Ret’s rotation fun. There are times where I have nothing to press rotation-wise, but that isn’t a big deal to me and can be worked around by using utility.

IMO, remove auto-attack, make CS spammable, and adjust the damage numbers as needed. I’d like to also see the Consecration talent tweaked to make CS function like HoR while standing in Consecration. All I want is spammable ST and AOE builders to go with my ST and AOE spender. Is that too much to ask for?

mythic prog - going to be sitting jadefire and blockade, and yet 100% in for 2 cuz BoP.

regarding adding a spammable builder/filler…

Judgement is built into the rotation with the increase on next TV… so i get why that cant be spam able or have a major reduced CD…

yet the need for a throw knife/pistol shot/posion knife/throw axe type button… i.e i can see Hammer of Wrath baseline… (mainly to fill the need of a builder when not in rage dodging mechanics/getting kited) if baseline… it would still have the same CD but… you could use it as is without the limitations… or maybe the talented version can be used all the time… and is more powerful during wings/execute…

then talent is revamped with:

Hammer of Wrath: → Maul of Wrath:
HoW does +x% additional holy damage during Avengers Wrath or if the target is below 35% (bonus from 20%)

then it would feel like an execute if you want to play that style.
or
same talent row:
[Blade of Wrath] also adds another charge of Blade of Justice… (like arms overpower.)

Fires of Justice Talent
Reduces the cooldown of Crusader Strike by 15% and grants it a 15% chance to make your next ability consume 1 less Holy Power. Also increases the number of charges by 1.

so you can pick which one you want.
other idears.
what if Divine Storm had a Holy nova effect, healing friendly targets for small amount… or concentration provides friendlies with stack of
“holy ground”
increasing the effectiveness of heals on the target while they stand in it and for 3 seconds after…

then maybe people want ret to stack with tanks (like hpaly) in raid, or bring them to keys… ((ret feels awesome at reaping, word of glory is clutch) but people will instantly rather meta comps… see RET high mythic keys Population.

once again still honeymoon phase for me… but even adding auras to ret would be sick… why does Ret paladins not have ret aura? :scream:

ok ok… auras are only for holy and prot…

so

Greater Blessing of Retribution
30 yd range
Instant
Requires Paladin (Retribution)
Requires level 65

Places a powerful blessing on a single ally for 1 hour, dealing (1.2% of Attack power) Holy damage to melee attackers.

Buff

Greater Blessing of Retribution

Melee attackers take Holy damage from the protecting Paladin.
1 hour remaining

Thoughts?

Given all the back and forth a few valid things have appeared. Ultimately the two things that would smooth the “rotation” out would be seeing Hammer of Wrath as a baseline ability. Honestly i’d vouch for both HoW and Wake but if I had to choose it would be HoW.

I feel I see a lot more people using consecration now

Ret is a dead spec I still play mine now as an alt, but DH is just overall better in every way.

As the only Ret in my guild I lead all meters and for the most part all parses for raiding. My “dead space” is very infrequent. Divine Purpose keeps my Righteous Verdict up most of the time.

Yes, many people don’t want Ret in pugs for raids or mythic+, which I find hilarious when my dps it top 2 in raids and tops in mythic+. Let’s just say I get rejected from joining many mythic+ runs, but when I’m finally allowed it, I’m doing 2x the total damage as the 3rd dps. It’s not me nor Ret, it’s the bias.

Sounds like folks need a damn fidget spinner while playing, or something.

Downtime? Toss a heal, stun a mob, HoP a healer… Pallies have lots to do all the time!

This toon is my first go at Paladin, and every time I tried to use Ret between level 1 and 21, it just felt…slow. As you mentioned, the cooldowns for the basic, early skills are awful, and then you have to wait until you get your bar filled up to even use some of them. I was really liking Holy for DPS, but now I’ve tried Prot and it feels like a great compromise between the other two (Consecration is the skill I liked in Holy). I’ve been told that Ret gets better at level 50+, but…I don’t know if it will ever click with me.

it feels slow even with 20% haste prot paladin is more fun to play then ret.prot feels more fluid then ret does.

I rarely, if ever, have downtime. Also in raids/m10s, you will be taking residual damage. You could use selfless healer procs, or WoG, LoH a low member, if you’re BE you should be using arcane etc…

Sounds like a get better issue if you’re above 400ish ilvl, properly itemized.
