Rested exp and leveling alts

On classic I first leveled my mage and created a priest and rogue, which I usually just chip away at their rested exp.

I’m excited to try shadowlands and will roll a mage and probably both a healer and tank (or melee dps) as alts. If possible, leveling the two alts through dungeon finder(?) or maybe daily quests(?).

I would like some input or ideas as I haven’t really played wow since TBC. Thanks!

i think u can consider druid , they r cool tank , heal , dps at both range and melee , dungens are good and quests , good luck

If you can afford heirlooms, an heirloom set gives you a good increase to rested experience (the top amount is +60% I think). So if you are running alts you can put on their heirlooms and sit them in a rested location, wait till its capped and then take them out to earn that tasty buff.

As to which class, its really what you like to play best. You seem to like the mage and there’s no reason not to do that. I know very little about tanks but as Celebrate said, druids are very handy for tanks and heals. Their dps has suffered of late (and apparently feral is nowhere near as good as its best) and Balance really depends on whether you like the playstyle.

Perhaps when the prepatch comes out you can load up a trial druid and see how it feels.

i’m somewhat confused… if you want to try the expansion, why are you trying to find ways to avoid it?
if history shows us anything, it’s probably safe to say that you won’t be able to use dungeon finder without having done at least some progression into the expansion, and you will need to quest in order to advance your character.

current wow isn’t like classic at all in that aspect.

questing is required in order to further your character.

I wanted to start a fresh mage and level that to 60 through new starting zone + expansion.

Then down the road roll probably two more toons. And in the past I had a healer and I could always fund a dungeon group to heal. I had a ton of fun and kinda assumed that was still a thing. I guess because I enjoy dungeons (especially minus the hurdle of having to travel there) - I thought to just play 5 or 10 dungeons a week and over time level that toon.

I appreciate your response, thanks!

the way it’s been set up, if you haven’t done BFA, this won’t be possible… you’ll need to play through BFA at least once (on the account, not with each character) before you can access Shadowlands content

HAHAHAHAHA…good luck. takes 10 days to cap rested experience, and for that you will get…1 more level. From mob kills overall, the heirloom bonuses atm on 9.0 are so bad they might as well be renamed to Trashlooms. Even with 60% rested xp consumption, i didnt notice any significant decrease in leveled time and it was negligible, plus its absolutely useless if you start a new toon fresh and level it in under 3 game sessions to 50. The other bonuses are equally terrible and worthless, because they couldn’t be bothered to give bonuses that are decent. So really, forget about heirlooms, just dont give a damn about them because of how bad they are after 9.0, really.

Ah, damn. I was looking forward to those heirlooms. Any tips on leveling an alt? Or should I just buy a boost, lol.

Generally, avoid Burning Crusade like plague. Those zones did not age well at all, so pick something else instead. I’d suggest WoD but they nerfed the XP from it recently to try make it more on par with the other expacs(except BC or vanilla zones untouched by cata). Once 9.0 lands, the best zones will generally boil down to redridge/darkshore/loch modan(for alliance) and once you get flying, move into Pandaria/WoD(yes, even after the nerfs) or just keep doing small zones like westfall/duskwood/ashenvale(if you are using warmode for the 30% xp buff on alliance, which is massive, then watch out gankers in duskwood/redridge, and DON’T bother with STV or rather Ganklethorn Hell because of the amount of max levels crossing over to do Zul’gurub or the deathmatch arena and deciding to pick on lower level guys in warmode). You should be looking at 6 hours round if you are quick and experienced on the zones layout and stuff, or if not, prob around 8-11 hours. I wouldn’t buy a boost because it will be faster to level 1-50 in general.

That said, if you create a DH or DK now and level 1-2 levels, it will start at a higher level on prepatch(a DK level 55 starts at level 8 on prepatch, but a dk at level 60 will start at 25 for example. Similary, DHs at level 100 or above will start at level 40ish instead of 8).

Also, do not queue for random dungeons because they are much slower XP compared to just questing in general. Ditto for BGs. Its particulary notable as most dungeons takes way too long and don’t give enough XP to justify running them with random dungeon queue.

Expect 8 to 12 hours of leveling. Even after the nerds to treasures and bonus objectives, WoD is still the fastest leveling xpac. But the difference is a matter of a few hours, so pick what xpac you think you will enjoy.

Note that you probably won’t complete two full zones before you hit 50, so think of it as a taste of an old xpac. People are trying to find workarounds so the mobs stay challenging at 50 (latest is using a starter account, grouping up with your retail account, and party sync drops your effective level to 50 if you’re over).

Even with Chromie time, there’s still going to be restrictions (e.g., Cata is split between post-Cata Classic up to 30-ish and Cata over 30-ish).

Given that leveling in general is so fast (there have been several xpacs now where Blizzard increased leveling speed in older xpacs to get people to newer content, and added another 70% or so for Shadowlands, while making the whole leveling experience be over 2 zones instead of 10 or more), losing XP on heirlooms isn’t that big of a deal.

That said, if you have heirlooms now, great. If not, it’s up to you if you want to buy or (worse) upgrade them.

Pros:

  1. They don’t get damaged.
  2. They hold a scaling enchant forever.
  3. Their relative power remains constant.
  4. Xmog doesn’t have to change every quest reward.

Cons:

  1. Old xpac enchants apparently stop functioning at iLvl 50. Don’t know what level that will be.
…a) These enchanted heirlooms add to the gold cost of heirlooms, and take up bag or bank space.
  2. Their iLvl will be less than quest rewards scaled for your level.
…a) Which means you may find yourself deciding between swapping out your heirlooms for the 1-3 levels that the quest green is better than the scaled heirloom.
…b) But it could be a half-dozen levels before you get a quest reward for that slot, so heirlooms cut the wait for replacement.
  3. Heirlooms are limited in secondary stats. Just critical strike and haste, with only a few pieces having versatility. No mastery at all. If you’re playing a tank or a class that values mastery, that could weight heirlooms MUCH less.
  4. Base heirlooms go up to level 29. There are still four upgrades, for five levels each. Look into how much the upgrades cost, and decide if it’s worth it for a smoother gear progression for another 1-2 hours per five levels. They reduced some costs to upgrade, but not as much as I’d like.
  5. The set bonuses are all pitiful. Rested bonus XP requires 10 days of not playing to max out, and only applies to kills. Out of combat regen is for when you don’t have food or drinks. And the level up AoE has as good a chance to happen while turning in quests (with the possibility of aggro from neutral mobs) as when fighting mobs in the wild.

Up to you if it’s worth it to get heirlooms. I’m not sure I’ll buy any more upgrades.

Also to add, the HP regeneration is useless as most classes have self heals while leveling, and almost never they come off as useful until level cap anyway(unless you try to pull like 10 mobs, which you wont do anymore on 9.0 due to aoe cap).

Personally, to make heirlooms useful to me:

Remove the upgrading. The entire leveling process sounds like it takes about 8 to 12 hours, about the equivalent of one Legacy xpac. So no need for four upgrades.

Better secondary stats. They apparently removed a lot of versatility not too long ago, and have never had mastery.

Fill in the missing four slots (gloves, bracers, belt, and boots).

Change Legacy enchants to scale up to iLvl 60-ish (fresh 50) instead of 50 (around level 45?).

im going to not bc of that but bc TBC will come back like classic did so im gonna wait for the real authentic experience over trying to make sense of a void elf going through, the inconsistency, far too much
