2nd EDIT: I finally (think) I figured it out. Chaos Bolt only gets it’s +40% damage modifier if you attack a PvP flagged target, OR you are inside a PvP- enabled zone. Be it instanced PvP content or open world areas for PvP World Quests for example.
You can see this if you pay attention to the tooltip. As soon as you enter an arena/ BG/ PvP area or attack an enemy player, you’ll see it jump up in damage.
EDIT: Seems to be not affected while inside arenas. But open world PvP and BGs are lower than it should be. Further testing required, tho.
I tested even further, something is just not right. You can tell me what you want, but the damage calculation doesn’t work most of the time.
Here’s why:
It went live EXACTLY like I warned, saw it coming a mile away.
Decimating Bolt legendary is also still bugged on the PTR, the only thing that works is that incinerate now at least gets its 100% chance to crit, but the crit damage is still missing.
Have to wait til we’re at renown 48, but I’m sure it’s also buggy on live.
If I test my damage under the same circumstances, it’s always missing at least 2k. The fact that I do regular lowrolls of 6k which never happened before is kinda telling.
Same goes in the open world, the baseline damage is 10-11k on players with 30k health or on target dummies/ mobs, where the same unbuffed CB would do 13k-14k before.
You’re right, didn’t catch focussed will, but it’s only 1 stack, not 2. So it’s 15% damage reduction. It still feels lower than it should be, I’ve done so much PvP in 9.0.5 and I know my damage values pretty much against any target at any time.
It’s weird.
I’ll need to queue some games and test it out further before I can definitely say something
There are also a couple buff icons I don’t immediately recognize so my best bet is again… test it in arena… where you know the comp and have a quick idea of all the modifiers in play but my damage felt fine last night doing 3s matches.
Did a lot more arena games right now, and it doesn’t work correctly most of the time from what I can gather. It’s sadly just too hard to really pinpoint it down, since our mastery adds so much variance to an already very variant spell (crit, versa, mastery, literally every secondary stat affects its damage) on top of the usual procs etc…
But overall I’m definitely critting lower on average than I should be.
Even had a game where I never did more than 11k damage with CB, no matter what. Sorry but no, just no.
I haven’t logged everything, but seeing just HOW MANY sub 8k chaos bolts I do, and on the top end how rare I even get above 14k, it’s pretty evident to me that there’s something wrong.
I had one game out of 38 today where I crit someone for 16800.
But yeah I dunno. Let more people chime in and we’ll see how it goes. Sadly not many destro mains left so whatevs. Only seen a lot of rerollers today, but they will quickly learn that the 9.1 praises for destro will be god tier again are just pure bait.
And not to sound overly dramatic, I for myself do really enjoy the patch. The freed PvP talent slot and the new talents are quite good, on top of the Shadowburn buff. But since no one tests stuff for themselves and everyone just copycats, nobody seems to have yet gotten the potential of it.
Not for every scenario, but Shadowburn truly shouldn’t be ignored and dismissed. It can pump, moreso in 2s where you don’t get to cast a lot against enemies like BM hunter for example.
Blasting Hunters for a 17k crit with Bonds of Fel is also hilarious af. Love it. (Granted, this was a top-end crit, but it regularly crits for 14k-16k with Badge up)

It sounds pretty dramatic but you do you.
Usually its because higher tier players… test everything and then let the average 2k joe know what to play because if it works against 2800 opponents itll work vs people at 2k who barely understand the game.

Wasnt Chaos bolt nerfed for PvP this patch? They got rid of the PvP talent and buffed base damage and damage in PvP but the numbers didnt add up to be equal or higher than what our CB damage with the pvp talent was, they were lower. I dont have the numbers in front of me but CB is 10-15% weaker in PvP now than it was on Monday
If all the numbers in the patch info are being applied correctly and additively, it should end up being a flat 5% nerf to Chaos bolt damage in PvP in exchange for cleaving it with Havoc now. My 10-15% number was wrong. Here are the changes that went through
Removed ‘Focused Chaos’ talent = 40% less damage
Chaos Bolt now deals 40% more damage in PvP combat (was 15%). = 25% more damage
Chaos Bolt damage increased by 10%. = 10% more damage
Therefore the net result was a 5% nerf to CB damage. Not a super big deal, but with RNG from mastery and CB always critting it can make some hits look a lot lower than what we’re normally used to seeing. Still sucks either way
Ahh someone should actually test this because something doesn’t feel right. Chaos bolts are hitting for like 10k., and 13-14 k with dark soul. Havoc bolts are hitting so low they feel totally insignificant. Archigadh might be on to something
The PvP modifier is absolutely not live. I’m hitting for 8-12k on my lock (ilvl 220) against low verse targets (under 30k hp). With DS, 14k. This was 20-24k before patch.
