Rename Daemon

Why is it in 2025, we still can’t rename our daemon pets?

Demon Union rules.

you’re not their owner, they are lending you their services.

Because they have seen the garbage we come up for player names.

How is that any different than hunters naming their pets horrible names?

Hunters tame wild animals and name them. Warlocks summon already named demons and subjugate them. I miss the old quests where you actually did that.

Warlock minion pacts are different than hunter tames, warlocks gotta adhere to set rules of conduct as the demon is not their slave but rather their contracted servant. Hunters are basically just adopting animals so being able to name them makes sense but warlocks aren’t allowed that as it violates the pact agreement. Don’t want the demon HR to get on your case for violating the rules after all. If a warlock violates the rights of their demon it results in fates worse than we can even imagine, eventually the pact becomes more of a partnership but by then the warlock and demon partner have already gotten used to each other and renaming the demon would ruin all that. Also a lot nicer to not need to come up with demon names as if I named my void walker on my lock something like “Mr Blueberry” I’m pretty sure he’d either strangle my warlock into oblivion or suddenly disappear due to shame leaving my warlock with one less summon

I remember a comic strip about some adventurer and a warlock who was very powerful and named Richard. He had an Imp pet named Hctibʻlil.
I thought it was a cool demonic name until I read it backwards.
I suppose folks would do the same trying to keep it looking “Demonic” while making the oddest names.

Hunters own their pets. Warlocks don’t

I can rename the cat I adopted from the shelter, I can’t rename my employee

Not with that attitude.

pets are beasts that did not have names previously
demons have names, and if demon lore is anything to go by the name is part of binding it to your service.

“that’s Helen, why do you keep calling her Karen?”

“have you talked to her?”

I believe they’ve said in the past that the difference is that the hunters tame their pet as a partner and friend so you name it much as you would a household pet. But the demons are sentient beings that are enslaved and already have their own names.

Doesn’t make that big of a difference to me, but pretty sure that’s the rational behind it. I think there is a way to resummon your demons until you get a name you like but that it costs gold.

In most lore you cannot enthrall a demon to your service unless you know it’s true name.

Also random feral cat does not have a name, so you can name it.

demon pulled from hell to serve you against their will already has a name.

The succubi don’t want to be named things like [redacted]

So if I name you, a sentient being, Jillybob. Will you now answer to Jillybob?

I distinctly remember before a certain ‘touchy feely weepy’ mindset infected World of Warcraft, that the spell was called “Enslave Demon”. Changing the name of a rose doesn’t change the smell. Much like calling :poop: something else does not remove the stink from it.

Wow. That Emote is still around? Crazy.

This one time a Linux daemon had to go get therapy due to having too many unchecked inner faces
