A pair of World of Warcraft achievements are next on the chopping block as Blizzard developers work to [remove inappropriate in-game content following California’s lawsuit]
As noted on the [Icy Veins] forum, an achievement titled “My Sack is Gigantique” will be retitled “My Storage is Gigantique.” Players earned the achievement by equipping a “Gigantique” bag from an NPC named [Haris Pilton] play on celebrity Paris Hilton. “Pilton” would ask the player “is your sack Gigantique” in the World’s End Tavern in Shattrath City, a major city introduced in the Burning Crusade expansion.
Another achievement titled “Bros. Before Ho Ho Ho’s” will be retitled “Holiday Bromance.” Players earned that one for using mistletoe on eight Alliance NPCs with “Brother” in their names.
I don’t care about these stupid virtue signaling changes while Blizzard had a photo of Bill Cosby in one of their lounges. Either way thats not what I care about. I care about things in the game that have been broken since Wrath like the Zep from Northrend to Org that drops you off at Stonetalon Mountains. Or the fact you still auto dismount after using avengers shield after choosing the mounted combat option in your tree in Legion. No one is crying about these changes except Blizz ptr themselves because of course “oh they are the good guys and we’re showing how good we are”. Its pathetic to think that people can’t see through this. Sorry for the wall of text.
It definitely stems from society. Every race, creed, nationality, orientation, gender, etc are on a virtue mission. They’re all fighting for their cause and video games are just the latest casualty.
It blows my mind people don’t see this for what it is.
Company gets in trouble, they do stuff like this to show they sowwy, happens with every company. I’m not saying they shouldn’t I just don’t get why people don’t recognize it.
It’s also a symbol of just how much peoples minds are in the gutter.
The terms aren’t problematic, it’s the people who immediately associate them with something sexual that are problematic.
I’m pretty sure that no matter how many achievements of areas they change the name of, or how much of the private lives of characters they reveal, people will let this go.
Token gestures like this are the MO of basically all companies caught in situations such as this. Scrub the name, scrub the evidence.
That said, the other half of the effort seems to be catching up on QoL SL changes which should never have needed further requesting outside beta, never mind a two patches. Whether or not this represents a fundamental change in development philosophies or is just a handful of glitter to further distract from the matter will all be determined by future developments.
And yes, I’m assuming it’s the glitter thing, and not that the developers have had any kind of Ebeneezer Scrooge like transformation where they legit realized the value of our time, convenience, and feedback.
Eh, it’s not that much of a wall. You clearly know what paragraphs and line breaks are, and the post isn’t that big or unweildy. It’s fine, honestly.
Given that none of this happened until after the lawsuit was filed and Blizzard’s dirty laundry began to get aired, who do you think isn’t seeing through this?
I don’t know how. And nothing is your posts links the two.
So nice to read another poster that cares about broken game performance. So few people seem to.
If you are keeping a list, the latest I have run into is the mount animations in the Argent Tournament and its instances are breaking down so you end up riding a horse that keeps freezing and appears to slide across the arena instead of galloping.
If those words as so insignificant, why are you concerned about them being removed? It seems pretty hypocritical to get this upset over a truly insignificant change. Your basically saying “I’m outraged because someone else is outraged about something I’m not outraged about.”. Furthermore, this is literally changing a few values, it’s not like it’s taking a massive amount of resources away from development and it’s pretty convenient that you fail to mention the changes Blizz are making to improve the game that are a direct result of player feed back.
Nah, an actual weakness of society is how people let facebook memes dictate their actions, like poisoning themselves with horsey paste or insisting Covid is fake/the flu/a bio weapon.
Well, the sack reference being removed is more in line where male genitalia is somehow too potent to be held up for reference or examination. (watch a movie rating sink because they didn’t edit out a less than 1 sec flash of said package vs the female equivalent) . I would prefer that they did not mess with that title as it would be an actual evening-up. However, I don’t believe that in WoW specifically there is a reference to female genitalia, so in this case there is nothing to even up. Overreaction, is how I see it, in this instance.
The Bros before reference is more problematic and I can see why it will be removed. The implication is not “friends before paid servants”, but “male friendship over all female companions” - that’s pretty ugly. Not going to miss that. It shouldn’t have passed review, and that it did pass review is because of the frat-boy company culture that it did. Try saying that line at the company water cooler and see how far you get in your average company. It’s a no-go.
I see this as less virtue signaling and more: “oh, oh yeah… yeah, that isn’t really cool” More a reflection of what is happening in the company. They are doing a top to bottom review now, this is what happens.
