Gear as a means of progression is good. Both from a getting stronger perspective and a I want to collect things perspective. Getting rid of it would leave a vacuum other systems would need to fill, and I think its a staple of RPGs.
Both of these issues are solvable without removing gear.
Ever since shadowlands legendary crafting I have ignored the crafting system… paying one or two months subscription in gold costs to get something crafted does not appeal to me. If it was all soulbound or warbound I might engage with it… as it is now its just pay to win.
Edit : Sorry, I do not want to come across as condescending. But it doesnt take anything close to that to get items crafted. Seriously. You shouldnt be paying 1/10th of that right now.
Crafting since DF is effectively just vendor gear / bad luck protection. The cost in gold is maybe 10k in mats and you’re converting crests into a guaranteed item slot with guaranteed stats.
Higher challenge should award better gear WITHIN THAT CONTENT Pillar. The problem (as I have explained it), is when gear from other content pillars is BIS for the chosen content pillar.
e.g HVs will make this more apparent when delve only players in heroic track gear will progress a lot slower than mythic track players… even if you account for equal levels of skill, the challenge is not even between those two players.
WQ, Delves and HVs are solo pillar content but Mythic is BIS to progress them and will need to factor in players of that ilvl in the tunning (its how wow is always designed).
Given I was doing T11s day 1 at like 635 as a DPS with healer brann, yes. 8 Mask visions feel like a decent challenge at 660, but I’m sure there will be some gradual difficulty nerf the same way the cloak used to work in bfa visions.
I hate to break it to you, but some of us dislike raiding because of lockout systems. A big portion of the game’s problem is that playing the timegate instead of the game itself is garbage.
Even if you removed gearing, keeping lockouts in-place would still ruin the content for some of us.
Also if they didn’t want people to feel left behind, they would allow makeups for missed vault and raid lockouts, which curiously isn’t a thing.
The FOMO to push people to keep playing timegate chores they sunk cost themselves into is a textbook design. Not surprised WoW uses such. It’s much harder to design a game that stands up on its own than to use said design. I honestly think the game can stand up on its own, but the devs simply fear doing such.
