Absolute best / easiet way to dip your toes in the water is an MSF course. Theyâre around $200, they provide the bikes, and upon successful completion you get a certificate that you can take to the BMV and get issued your license. Donât have to mess with any of the BMV written / riding tests. Itâs about 50/50 classroom / riding, all of which is invaluable for new riders. Itâs an incredibly cheap way to dip your toes in the water to see if you even think you might enjoy it. Like, itâs such a no-brainer way to start out that anyone who says otherwise has no brain.
The only two things most people donât already own that are required for the course are a helmet and riding gloves. Any kind of over-the-ankle footwear, long pants, and long sleeve garmet meets the criteria for the course - it doesnât have to be motorcycle specific. You donât have to shoot your wad on gear just to take a course and then possibly find out youâre paranoid and uncomfortable the whole time youâre on 2. There are plenty of helmets in the $200 range that are worth spending your $ on, and you can get a passable pair of starter gloves for under $50. Boom, youâre course ready and signed up for less than $500. If after that course you think âyeah this is something I can see myself doingâ THEN trigger on quality gear, and have it ready to roll before you ever head out on your own bike.
What I armor up in everyday I ride costs more than most peopleâs gaming rigs, and what I wear out at the track costs 2x most peopleâs gaming rigs. But Iâve been riding / racing / tracking for 30yrs, and still log more street miles / yr than most people put on their cars. Not like I just accumulated $9k worth of protection overnight. But you gear for the crash as if itâs inevitable and protect yourself as best you can. Anyone who tells you they donât worry too much about gear because âthey donât plan on getting in an accidentâ or âthey donât plan on crashingâ stay the fk away from them and donât listen to a single piece of adivice they have to offer you. Theyâre morons. No one sets out on a bike intent on having an incident.
If things like some random youtube video of absolutely outlier incedents like a prius greasing a rider at a roundabout are whatâs going to shape your ideas of what riding on a day to day basis is like, donât bother - riding scared and paranoid has to be miserable. Anybody and everybody thatâs been riding for awhile is aware of, understands, and embraces the risks because the rewards are well worth it. Alot of people will quit based off an incident they had that scared the bejeezus out of them, or they made a âbusiness decisionâ (family, work, etc) - they were never bikers, they were just tourists passing through our 2w world.
