Remove all gearing from pvp

abit of a repost from me awhile back but I wanted to raise the topic again before dragonflight,

There’s a fundamental misunderstanding about character progression and pvp on blizzards part.

In PvE character progression is first get good + getting gear + bigger numbers + faster clear times = works great for that aspect of the game. In PvE you wont get those last 3 without the gear to pull the numbers. So gear is really important in PvE.

In PvP the character progression to me and I think alot of other pvpers, is just getting better at your class and going up in rating. The gearing part is just a formality, really (and a very grindy unfun one too).

Like in S2 I went into random BGs as an rdruid (259ilvl) and pull id top 3 DPS and top healing like every time, just simply because the gear I have is just so monstrously better, like ill run into packs of low geared players and just like 4v1 them(as a healer kek), the gear gap is honestly insane and will continue to be insane in dragonflight. Like that’s especially not fun for the low geared players.

Now fast forward to this season, being a very experienced healer I go into games and get crushed @1500 with a like 285 ilvl rdruid. So like ya that feels really bad too, makes it very hard to analyze games to see what you can do better.

The mentality of its an mmorpg gearing is fundamental is frankly old and outdated. WoW success kicked off with being one of the most accessible mmos at the time of its release in 2004, and some of the QoL improvements in wrath/mop kept that going for quite a sustained bit of time running into WoD/legion. Even in legion when class design took a nose dive the ladder was still very active. Got bored? Just play something else, no big deal.

All forms of gearing should be removed pvp. Even with ‘1 honor, 1conquest’ set you still just create a barrier to entry for no reason what so ever and only create frustration for newer and returning players.

Just give everyone the same ilvl in pvp with a stat pool you can customize as you wish. You wanna be a full crit resto druid? Fine. A full mastery arms warrior? Go for it. Only use templates so that PvE changes wont affect PvP, honestly and if templates help them balance pvp faster too im all for it.

I agree for the most part, but some stats are insanely better for a certain spec and I think it would be abused. I am happy we are at least getting back to 2 sets so everyone can at least be on equal footing at some point. My biggest concern is the amount of cc right now is atrocious and it’s getting far worse in DF. I can barely play my character in a bg right now and it seems like I’ll just be sitting at the gy most of the time in DF.

This is why they shouldn’t remove gearing

will admit was pretty baller pulling top dps and heals in random bgs, but no so healthy for game.

There’s a DR on any stat past 30% now right? So it really couldn’t be that much abused. But situations will need to be avoided where one stat for a given class is so much better people just dump all their stats into the DR past 30%

I remember learning Mistweaver in Wod and just kind of tanking 3-5 people for the entirety of every unranked battleground because they’d all just instantly put me on DR and either not kick or kick instantly.

Imagine seeing the enemy healer with 5 people on them and they’re off stun DR then Shinigamix-Tichondirus kidneys them with 1 point

im down.

i would actually have time to play all the specs and stuff in this game.

I’m at the opposite side of this argument. Gearing in PvP is something I genuinely enjoy. I’ll also add, I never expect very much balance in WoW pvp. However, Blizz butchered it this expansion (imo).

DF is looking much better to me. At the end of the day, I think there should be 3 sets for PvP max. One honor set, one conq set, and maybe a tradeable crafted set (or maybe just have a default scaling system to put fresh max levels a couple ilvls below the honor set).

The fact that a fresh 60 has a health pool closer to a level 1 than to a geared 60 is absurd

I think “gearing” basically is fine. It’s an RPG - it’s part of the game. The problem is the huge disparity between characters of different gear levels, even with full PvP gear of the same season. The difference is far too stark. It should be small, but noticeable. Right now, the “worst full pvp gear” is so far inferior to the “best full pvp gear” it’s like not even playing the same game.

Edit: I wonder, does anybody know of a super-high-rated player that plays games in bad gear (meaning full pvp gear, but of a low level) and is able to succeed? I tried searching, and could not find any such thing. This was a regular occurrence in expansions past - you’d see videos of top players’ alts in mediocre gear beating up on 2200 players. I bet you don’t see that anymore…

Sounds like an unfun and pointless waste of time.

I mean, you’ve had plenty of people go from 0 to duelist/glad without issue, even via lfg. The thing is that most of the time is spent doing battlegrounds for honor to upgrade the gear.

The progression is neato if you’re coming into the season fresh as a ranked player, but it’s a little janky if you’re coming in late, playing an alt, etc.

Heck, the most efficient means of gearing is probably playing like 70-80 games in total then just doing BGs/shuffle spread over a couple of weeks.

Can you back that up? What % of duelist/glads are new players (not new CHARACTERS - new PEOPLE).

Grouping these two together is insane. Coming in late is horribly painful. Playing an alt is a gift. Queue up with your max-geared buddies and grab a beer - free gear.

Only if this means we get greased up and fight naked.

I enjoy the gear grind in WoW pvp at the start of the season. I just don’t like playing my alts this far into the season without some kind of catch-up system. I want those BoA conquest boxes.

why?

WW is practically unplayable in BG’s with how much CC there is.

pop burst
rooted
pets feared from priest
break root
stunned
dead

At this point in the game, some specs are frustrating unless you have pocket heals. And that situation negates the randomness of randoms.

EDIT: Thought this was a bg topic, sorry

It rewards me for putting time into the game. My character gets stronger. Basic RPG principles.

I get that you think PvP progression should be based on skill only. But gear progression can be fun too. There is room for both.

No, they’re basic PVE RPG principles. They don’t belong in PVP. There’s no competitive PVP game/esport out there that allows for such gear disparity. There’s a reason for this. PVE gearing progression in PVP is completely outdated and should have been removed forever ago.

If they want to give us gear for gear’s sake, then we should have an AWC tournament style vendor where every piece of gear is free and we can mix and match as we please.

the progression is in your heart though not your gear

no thanks, ask for a TR server if you want max lvl gear and you kids can spam que pvp like it’s fornite.

But i and many others like to out gear people and destroy them.

Why do you think WOLTK is so popular? you can literally 2 shot ppl there BECAUSE of your gear difference,

Look what happened in legion when they added templates. wow pvp was at it’s lowest in history.

Blizz stated it was bad for pvp and has stop doing the pvp templates.

In pve if you are more skilled/have more time and do harder content then you are stronger then the rest.

If i spend more time than you and im achieved a higher rating than you, than yes i should be stronger than you 100%!

I disagree with this mentality. I like the fact that I am able to gear my character in Arena and take that gear into BG’s and complete Achievements more easily. I feel rewarded for putting in the time and effort to increase my rating. The fact that various parts of the game are interconnected this way is one of the primary reasons to play it.

It’s fine that you disagree. There’s nothing wrong with being illogical.

Compare pvp to a sport like soccer and imagine that one of the players has access to shoes that will control the ball with a single touch no matter where the ball hits his foot. They would be a god.

In any competitive environment it is imperative that there is as much of an even playing field as possible so that individual skill is the only outlier.

This is why there are no other esports that allow for gear gap.
