That’s normal behavior of this trinket. It did this back in BFA as well.
It will hit anything between you and your target, such as pets/minions, critters, other mobs/enemies, gateways, totems, and it is affected by terrain/objects between it and it’s target, such as Pillars, fences, rocks, gaps, etc…
it spawns at 7 o’ clock from where you’re facing so you just gotta make sure you the area is clear between you and your target if you want to ensure it hits them.
A trick people did back during BFA is cast it with your back against a wall and if you’re on your target next to a wall/pillar, casting it with your back against the wall, will cause it to essentially spawn right on top of your target and explode, as seen here in this video by RexTroy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1UGgQekLa8.
You can also see in the 8.3 video linked above, at 7m 25s Rextroy touches on how it can bug out and you can even see in the footage how it gets caught up on the arena structures and explodes on no one and bugs out during it’s pathing cause of the arena structure in it’s way.
Lastly here’s a random comment i see on this forum after doing a quick search of posts from back during BFA:
So just goes to show this behavior of this trinket is nothing new but has always done it since it was first introduced into the game and is most likely intended and the reason why this was intended is because during BFA at this time, the two top trinkets were the Writhing Segment of Drest’agath and the Remote Guidance Device. Out of the two the motorcycle trinket was more powerful and did more damage, however most people used the Drest trinket instead because it was guaranteed damage to your target, unlike the bike which required set up, a delay between when you used it and it hitting your target (chance to react to and block it), etc. So Blizzard essentially balanced the bike trinket’s insane damage by making it’s set up complicated and it failing 1/2 the time you used it by it getting caught up on something other than your target…
