I never thought of Revendreth as punishment. It’s therapy for the soul, and decent therapy IRL means being uncomfortable, facing yourself and all your faults and learning to work through difficult events from the past that shape who you are today. Therapy stings, but it isn’t Hell. The Maw is Hell, and it’s for people who are truly incorrigible, unrepentant and incapable of taking responsibility for themselves. Pretty sure there’s a quest chain with the Accuser who explains why Venthyr do what they do with souls, and why the decision to send a soul to the Maw is not to be taken lightly, because everyone deserves a chance to change themselves.
