Pre-Ordering digital goods like they’re gonna run out is clownish.
Pre-Ordering gives them an infusion of cash that may be more than what they spent to make the expansion itself, giving them no incentive to make the expansion better.
Remember the last time they tried to release an expansion early, then had to delay it because it was awful - Shadowlands. And look at how it turned out.
If you expect this expansion to be released in SIX MONTHS (faster than Shadowlands) to not be a dumpster fire with the current record Blizzard has going… a fool and his money are soon parted.
Keep in mind:
Release this year. It’s already mostly past 6 months in the year. 6 months for Alpha, Beta, and Release?
Conversly it could be like a lot of alpha/kickstarter games projects, more money means ability to hit more stretch goals cause they knownthey will can invest more and still make a profit, which is truth? Who knows /shrug but the accountants
This is true and the people who think otherwise should feel bad.
This is true and untrue. Too many preorders and they can feel confidant they have a healthy subscriber base, and as you say, don’t need to do better. Too few, and they shift developer resources to projects with better margins for profit.
IMO, if you’re a whale, go ahead and spend your $90. If you’re a 6 month subscriber, don’t pay right now. Send the message you expect better.
I’m not pre-ordering because the incentives don’t look good to me and I don’t have enough information to know if the expansion is worth playing on launch. So I’m not going to rule it out just yet. Just going to cautiously observe their progress in the months to come.
I’ll buy a product if it’s attractive. I don’t particularly care about their for-profit reasoning since every business is going to operate on that.
I think there’s an argument to be made about people who fall for FOMO and how it correlates to lazy development cycles. This has been observed across the industry, but if people genuinely like what they are purchasing then that’s simply their right as a consumer to buy whatever they wish. I just hope these aren’t the same people who then complain about the expansion because I think being aware of one’s own actions and how it impacts the grand scheme of things is important.
Normally you’d be right, pre-ordering games basically means they get your money and you get nothing until the game releases and then you finally get the game, and what you initially paid for might change considerably before you finally get it in your hands.
But in this particular case your pre-order gets you items you can use now. And those items are not without value. I mean, let’s look at how much value if these items were available on the Blizzard store and bought separately (this will be in Australian dollars, since I’m Australian):
Drakks Pet - $13.50
Level 60 Character Boost - $80
Tangled Dreamweaver Mount - $34
Murkastrasza Pet - $13.50
Timewalkers Hearthstone Toy - $13.50
Diadem of the Spellkeeper Transmog - $20
Wings of Awakening Transmog - $20
30 Days of Game Time - $20
Total of all items if purchased separately: $214.50
So if I pre-order the Epic edition right now, I get $214.50 worth of stuff that I can use right now, for $120. Seems like a worthwhile purchase compared to most pre-orders.
Funny thing about Paranoia. Sometimes you’re wrong. I do not post on alts.
Don’t argue with a fool, lest they drag you down to your level and beat you with experience. Keep fighting windmills and you’ll eventually get some value out of -digital- goods, Don.
I’ll be pre-purchasing it when I get paid. Not because of the “perks” or any of the other nonsense … it’ll be because I know myself and how I’ve bought every expansion to date since I started playing way back when.
If it sucks - which very well may be the case - then at least I’ll know I tried it.
Sitting back, paying a sub (which is required to post on the forums), and making a thread like this indicating you won’t be buying the expansion is funny and counterproductive.
You’ll be buying it, just like the vast majority of everyone else. It’s just a matter of when you’ll be buying it. Which may not be now, but they’ll get your money one way or another.
And this is coming from someone who quit 2 weeks into SL and still doesn’t regret buying it … even though I think it’s on par with WoD and BFA in terribleness.
Yes, I’m back, but only for a month cause I got bored of playing my other games.
