I haven’t raiding much in some time and I want to get back into now. I’m hesitant because of everything we need to know. I know to watch the videos by certain player, I prefer Hazelnutty to fat boss because she cuts to the chase and gives clear information. The problem isn’t getting the info is retaining it.
There’s like 10 bosses that you need to remember all of that stuff for, for both the general fight info and role specific info. How do you all remember all of that for a straight run? There’s raid finder and I go wing by wing with that, but it doesn’t involve the full fight mechanics. I guess another option is to join a group and do the first 3 or 4 fights that you know and then leave, but that sucks too because I don’t want to leave a group high and dry, especially because I plan on healing.
Just do LFR first. You’ll get insta-accepted as a healer.
LFR is pretty easy. Damage is not that crazy and lots of people will be dying anyway, not just you. You’re not gonna ruin somones life by messing up an LFR
Also: usually those groups fall apart after 3 bosses, so don’t worry about doing 10
I think the best way is just doing the content. Eventually it’ll become second nature – in the beginning you’ll prob need to read guides/watch videos before each boss to keep it fresh in your memory.
Also helps if the raid leader is good with instructions, and/or calling out the main mechanics.
The important thing is just to remember raid concepts.
-Don’t stand in bad
-Pay attention to your DBM
-Know how your class works.
-Know what it’s job is in the group.
-Have a general idea of what you should be doing on a fight. Will adds come? Will they not come. Little things like that. You don’t need to remember everything.
For any fight just know one or two essential things that have to happen or you’ll die. That’s it.
Then practice. Trying to memorize fights entirely isn’t helpful for most players. Most players rely on intuition and experience.
If you learn on LFR there’s not a lot different on normal. Then not a lot from normal to heroic. You’ll really only need to remember a few differences.
I’m part of the crowd that best learns by doing, so with more & more pulls the mechanics become second nature. If there’s a certain mechanic on a boss that you struggle with remembering, take full advantage of our ability to use addons and go to wago.io and find a WeakAura for it. No, using addons doesn’t make you bad and anyone who tries to scream that isn’t worth listening to.
One final thing don’t try to remember everything. As a healer you barely need to know the fight. Just keep your monkeys alive so they can finish fight.
I just got into “hardcore” raiding after spending my whole WoW life as a roleplayer, so I completely understand you. (I am a healer as well).
My two big suggestions are:
1.) Have DBM. Pay attention to it. (Also keep it updated!)
2.) Ask questions. Granted, LFR is not the best place to do so, but I’d wager most players out there have no problem clarifying a mechanic for someone who is willing is ask -clearly wanting to do better.
Also keep in mind that the more you do something the more you will remember and the more it will become ‘muscle memory’.
Best of luck to you! If you have any questions or someone to commiserate with on this you can find me on Discord: M A D#8406
After you experience them a couple of times, you just learn them. With a bit of experience and raid mods, it becomes automatic and you don’t even really think about them any more.
The best guilds I’ve been in have had us take a 3-5 min break prior to each boss, the first time through, to refresh our memories and get us zoned in on that one in particular.
Lacking that, DBM does the heavy lifting and I just kinda wing it.
It becomes muscle memory with enough practice. Our group finally has Heroic on a one night clear, and it’s because we pounded our skulls out against Denathrius for 70+ wipes until people understood what his mechanics were.
Organized raiding is still my favorite way to learn, but the other advice here is great as well. Work your way up from LFR or find a Normal progression guild for the best ways to get a handle on mechanics.
