Remember Howling Blast AOE?

Anyone else miss it being our main AOE button? Our capstone frost talent.

Ya, things got a bit nutty pre legion with master frost but I feel like it needs to make a return as our main rune spender in aoe.
Standing in DnD just feels bad for frost.
It also gives us a rune spender yo use from range.

Remove cleaving strikes
Make howling blast consume 2 runes, hit like a truck again (non rime) and benefit from KM.

Would need to be tuned so that we’re always pressing obliterate/fs in single target and howling blast/ga in aoe.

I think it would just feel better than dnd cleave.

This isn’t to say that cleaving Obliterates is much better, but I’ve been playing Masterfrost in Cata. Holy hell is it boring.

Tuning is easy, have it do more damage if it hits more targets. Like Rogue Crimson Tempest.

Kinda hope during tuning the damage from cleaving strikes is toned way down and frosts other multi-target abilities are increased.

since the beginning they nerf’d it at every turn and it used to do loads of damage

i had the idea of it costing 1 rune but you could hold down the button and consume more runes for more damage

there was a trait that made the aoe hit twice

Well, yeah. I’m walking through Cata dungeons mashing Howling Blast, only stopping to spend for Frost Strike/occasional Obliterates/Scourge Strikes to spend Unholy runes. It absolutely blasts, but it’s also incredibly dull to play. It’s pretty mindless.

As I said, the goal is for that not to occur.

Once again my proposal is for HB to replace OB and remove cleaving strikes for AOE.
This would change up gameplay for AOE which currently the only change is dropping DND inside pillar and replacing FS with GA which is quite boring.

If it’s easy, how do they do it? Can’t directly nerf obliterate and cleaving strikes just enables it to hit multiple targets unless you make something that says it only does like 25% of its normal damage to secondary targets. The only place to put that damage is howling blasts secondary targets with rime activated.

Can’t take aoe damage and put it just anywhere. It has to do to secondary targets.

It is boring. You shouldn’t even be pushing obliterate unless blood plague is up and you only want to spend 1 unholy rune to force frost and death rune returns. It’s absolutely boring and only half the spec.

So it’s switching one button’s emphasis for another, without accounting for the current spec’s intended usage of Howling Blast (mostly with Rime, and to trigger Killing Machine during Pillar with Obliteration).

This would require much more to change in the base spec than just “turn HB damage up and turn off cleaving strikes”.

Yeah that works more or less.

That doesn’t address anything though. Its just the same ol thing with the same ol problems just some damage moved.
