Back in 2005 when BGs first came out my friends and I queued all the time. We loved them, in every bracket. Win or lose it was about those epic brawls, and the moment where you maybe pulled off that 3 v 1, or capped the flag, or backcapped that flag in AV.
Today things have changed, and I definitely see a schism in the player base. People care about rewards, not activities. It doesn’t matter if what you are doing is fun. All that matters if it’s efficient.
These people want 5 minute AV matches. They have a prescribed play style, and anyone who wants to actually pvp or play how we did 15 years ago is screamed at in chat. We’re literally called griefers for pvping in a pvp match. For trying to win.
I have a question for the zoomer crowd, the people pushing rep and rank. What happens when you finish that AV rep? What happens when you hit rank 10 / 11/ your goal?
I’ll tell you, because I’ve seen this in retail for over a decade. You quit, and demand more content. Only…there is no more content. Vanilla wow has very little left to offer you.
When AB launches you’ll do the same desperate efficiency grind, and will actively avoid anything like pvp if that’s what moves your bar. And then what?
You’ll have burnt yourself out on all the BGs to get gear that you can use to…what exactly? In retail there’s another dopamine hit. Another patch. Another raid. Another season.
In vanilla we play for fun. We play because we enjoy the activities. If you don’t, then your time in this game is fast coming to an end. Because in a few weeks you’ll have ground out all the points you can grind. You’ll hit your limit. You’ll max rep, and stop ranking.
And then you will come here to complain. You will rail at Blizzard.
Meanwhile I, and many, many people like me, will actually play and enjoy battlegrounds. We’ll play to win. We’ll play to have those epic fights.
You do you, but please, for the love of god, stop telling us not to pvp in the activity designed for us.
