I recently moved my WoW install to a faster drive. From the instructions I found online, I simply copied my entire game directory to the new drive and changed the directory in the game settings on the launcher. It all seems to work well, except it keeps reverting to the original install location. What have I missed?
Edited to add: I did keep the old installation, just in case things went south.
You should be able to use the game launcher settings to find where the new install is located.
I’ve done that. Repeatedly. But it keeps getting reset.
Try running the wow exe directly from the new install path. Before the launcher that would change the registry in Windows. But having 2 installs probably will conflict.
Should I just delete the old one? I’m a bit nervous but I’ll need to do it sometime.
You could just move the entire directory aside (while Battle.net isn’t running) to a different part of the filesystem. That way it still exists intact but isn’t where the launcher expects it.
Also, soft-deleting the directory in Windows Explorer moves the directory to the Trash Can, from which it can be restored until you decide to pull the trigger and empty the trash.

Ok, I figured out the issue. The desktop launcher icon was pointing to the launcher on the old installation. So the launcher must use its own location as the install directory when you start up. It still seems wrong that specifying a directory doesn’t save it permanently. But I have resolved the issue for now.
