Since warlock is generally considered an “evil” class and summons demons, does anyone hesitate to play them for religious or moral reasons? I know WoW is just a game, but I don’t think this is something unreasonable to ask. It wasn’t that long ago, for instance, that some religious groups were pushing kids to not play D&D. I have a warlock and I’m not making any judgements one way or the other, just curious!
Honestly if that’s the sort of thing to affect someone, they should probably not be playing WoW or any violent/mature video game.
Besides, like most of WoW, everything is pretty much based off of DnD and has been around for decades. Soulstone, Drain Life, Summons etc, all in DnD already so it’s not like WoW is making waves or something in terms of thematic content.
Anyway, I just flipped through my pocket bible and didn’t see any mentions of subjugating demons or ripping open gateways to/through ‘magic outer space’ so I think we’re good.
While I can sorta understand what you’re trying to say, it doesn’t really make sense. For example;
You kill people and other intelligent races (sometimes entire tribes) for various reasons, kill random wild life, start wars… I’m sure there’s way more obvious stuff I’m missing.
Point being that playing a warlock is evil-lite compared to what all player characters do ingame regardless of class
A reminder that Doomguy is the most Christian character to come out of video games in the last 25 years.
Absolutely not. It all comes down to your own roleplaying perspective. You don’t necessarily have to actually roleplay exactly but you can decide upon what type of warlock you are.
The only constant between warlocks is that we exploit forbidden magicks for power. All warlocks have a spellcasting background, be it mage, priest, shaman, whatever. They then, for one reason or another, are lured into practicing fel and shadow/void magic. They might desire the power, they might be tempted by someone else, or maybe they are just naturally curious and have more balls than your average mage. It doesn’t matter. Point is, the temptation isn’t strictly for evil purposes, like you might want the power to protect the world, or you might want it to destroy the world.
Guldan was the latter and the most obviously evil example, but he is an extreme. A better example is the Black Harvest. They are a collection of warlocks from different races with different backgrounds. One delights in inflicting pain, another is more dutiful and wary of the dangers of being a warlock, but they all have one thing in common. They all know that there are great evils that threatens the world and all believe the best chance of overcoming those evils is to use their own tools against them. They’ve sought power from the Legion, the Twilights Hammer, from Illidan, the Firelands, etc. They use what they learn not to rule the world, but to save it from those external threats. And they do so warily as they know what happens if you get too careless in searching for power, they had already lost Kanrethad to that.
So, you see, Warlocks are not cut and dry evil. There are some that are good, as well, just more willing to endanger themselves. It all depends on how you view your warlock. I view Hezzlocks as a business entrepreneur from Kezan that clawed his way to the top through a mix of business tactics and a demonic pact, and after it all blew up, found that the life of a hero can be quite profitable. Edit: Oh, that, and his Fel Imp, Gibpik, is an absolute bro and they enjoy killing bad guys and getting paid for it together
Hidden hand idea of gameplay bothers me too, but i play a dh lol!
I eats daemons literally for breakfast
So it would be ok for them to “kill” humans on a video game so long as they use an appropriate class to do it? gtfoh. lol.
Religion is silly. You are in a game killing things. Regardless if you are a warlock or a paladin…only religion would make you ignore that pressing point of basically killing thousands of things for gold. Do not base your personal enjoyment on stale 2000 year old religions based off of an even more stale 4000 year old religion made up by people who decided to stop doing the multi god religion.
No, I’m able to separate fantasy and any moral/religious beliefs I have. My intent isn’t actually to worship any demons but it’s a fun fantasy power to experience.
Just had to point out what a one-sided conversation this will be. You are on the warlock class forums asking if ppl have problems playing warlocks…
Just to throw this out there…but for the record King Solomon regularly summoned and controlled demons to do his bidding and unless I’m mistaken he is regarded as a pretty wise and holy king.
I’m sure someone knows way more than I do but as far as I know, the whole idea that messing with demons is bad really doesn’t have it’s origins in any religious text and was something that came more out of the Catholic church hundreds of years after Christ died.
I mean if you really wanna get technical the Bible wasn’t even formed until several hundred years after Christ, and was just a committee of guys deciding which books were canonical and which were apocryphal. So you really need to ask yourself…what do / should you base your interpretation of “good and bad” on? Cause everyone is going to use different sources and rules formed at various points in time to form their foundation of moral and ethical behavior.
I’m also sure their exist “religious” people out there who would have as much issue with Druids and Shamans as they do Warlocks for their use of “pagan” magic as well. But in the end this is a video game, and personally I’m going to write anyone off as a lunatic who can play a game like WoW but “draws the line” at what classes are morally acceptable to play. No matter what you play in WoW we’re all asked to kill for pretty flimsy reasons and commit genocide from basically every other quest.
To make this perfectly clear, demons in wow aren’t demons in the sense of religions in real life.
Demons in wow are more like, corrupted aliens.
