Relics of the past - please explain

Hi all, i just wanted to know if anyone here has heard or read an official explanation about the lowered ilvl upgrade (i.e. 54 instead of 87) of relics of the past V.

I don’t understand the objective behind this change and would really appreciate a blue response regarding this.

If I’m not alone on this, maybe there’s a way to make some noise on this issue to ask for an official explanation? I think it’s the least we deserve.

They are there to essentially make old crafted gear viable at a higher level. With all of the expansion packs prior to SL equal in leveling ability they had to make each expansions crafting equal.

In Beta the Relics made it so you could pretty much buy items, slap and relic on it and triple its vendor sell price. You could print money. They fixed that.

Thanks for the reply, but I have to wonder, is ilvl 54 gear viable to you or anyone you know in any way?

I get better gear questing on my alts without any of the hassle of gathering, crafting, or coming up with the gold to buy this older content crafted gear.

That’s what I don’t understand.

It looks like they put the ilvl 87 relics in shadowlands crafting itself, they’re called novice crafter’s mark.

Where do the relics come from? I noticed it on my tailor when I was making some bags for my wife’s alt.

I think at this point crafted items are really just for brand new players or people collecting transmogs.

Wouldn’t that still be pointless though? I mean the pre-patch loot is ilvl 100 and I am assuming even that will get invalidated after a few quests in SLs

So why not fix the sell price instead of just nerfing the crap out of it’s item level? 87 item level isn’t going to let you leap straight into BIS gear relative to BfA but it will let you ‘buy’ a character that’s ready for all BfA content except maybe Mythic raids.

I was making relics of the past so I could use the crafted BFA gear on my low level toons.

Yeah that’s the problem. Only way I can see it being used is for new alts in shadowlands if you’re really having a problem surviving while leveling.

Asking for a blue response is against the forum rules, just saying.

This right here.

I can’t wrap my head around how useless this is.

At the very least, I’d make the Relic V item level 87-90. Not as good as prepatch gear, but still viable.

As it stands right now, the crafted gear is pointless.

I just read the wowhead guide on these relics, but I still don’t understand them. So each relic makes an item regardless of which expansion ideal for for a certain level bracket?

The potential selling to a vendor for raw gold issue was fixed by adding the expensive vendor mats to the recipes, changing the ilevel was just a giant middle finger from Blizzard.

Crafting ilevel 100 would have allowed it to be at the ilevel of low Visions, invasions, normal raid, pre-patch event and BfA emissary gear.

Changing it to 87 would have made it a bit meh, decent for starting out even though it would be quickly replaced with WQ / vision / invasion / pre-patch event gear.

Changing it to 54 is just useless.

I dropped JC and switched to BS because I thought it would be fun to go get some old recipes, and make useable gear with them. Well, that isn’t going to happen, ilvl 54 is beyond useless gear.

Yeah, that’s it. I just used a bunch of blackrock ore (Warlords) to make some relics, then made some Leystone plate armor (Legion) for a level 14 character.

Cool. Does it work in reverse? If I wanted to make say the imperial plate set from vanilla for a level 40 or up guy?

I do not understand the nerf either - it is the most asinine and spiteful move I’ve seen from Blizzard and I too want an answer.

Just leveled a rogue, heirlooms at 50 are ilevel 54 or 6 to give you a reference. First WQ emissary that showed up was 60.

I guess I don’t understand the relics at all.

Is the point to be able to make Brown Linen Pants a viable piece of gear at high level? Why would anyone want to craft legacy gear at a higher iLevel when we have transmog. Are there some gems of gear that are “that good” to be worth crafting? Gear that doesn’t take 5 levels of mat gathering?

Gear for level 45’s is ilvl 50. It looks like they decided they want them to work for pre-50 levelers.
