Rek the Hardened's Swift Strike (TOP)

Usually people skip this guy in large part because swift strike does so much damage, but looking at logs today there’s no way this functions as intended.

Edit: spoilered wrong information on how the ability is working, but it’s here for discussion context.

On an 11, I was taking 1.4million every tick as plate, where our shaman was eating 3.4mil hits and we all took overkilled hits for over 10 million. The tank only got hit 5 times during this period (versus our 10-19 hits taken) for 650k each swing and the ability is supposed to do 45% of the damage to 2 random group members. The ability is usually transferring 45% of the unmitigated melee swing damage and the unbalancing strike hit to 2 random group targets (the latter hits for about 50% more than a regular swing). However, I can see in logs where an unmitigated melee swing of 5.4m transfers a 4m and 2.4m swift strike to players. I see a 7.7m melee swing transferring 4.25 (should be 3.4) and many other seemingly wrong values.

Turns out this guy is just wildly overtuned.

It hits for 45% of the base attack, not 45% of the damage that hit the tank.

I did misread what was proccing the strike here, but the damage is just so high that I can’t believe it’s supposed to use the unmitigated damage value to effectively swing for nearly 20 million damage every 1.3s on a 10. The actual bosses don’t do nearly that much damage. Even if he wasn’t white-swinging for 10,000,000 damage, it’s a ridiculous healing/dr check that can’t possibly be intended.

Its basically sweeping strikes but with a 50 yard range that applies only to melee attacks. If his base melee attack is 10,000,000, swift strikes will hit 2 targets for 4,500,000 a piece and then mitigation from their armor/defensives will be calculated to reduce the final result.

My original numbers were off and I edited, but this is not how the ability is functioning, even ignoring that it likely SHOULD be using the mitigated damage value. I can’t post links or images so you’ll have to scan WCL yourself, but look at the event logs during Rek fights and you’ll see that even if you accept the abnormally high damage this guy does, the values don’t make sense.

I’m not seeing how the values don’t make sense unless you’re taking the fully mitigated melee swing a tank is being hit by and assuming that’s the base melee attack, when its not. The boss is basically attacking 3 people simultaneously, with the 2 non tanks being targeted by a 45% damage melee swing.

a 15.7 million unbalancing blow is proccing a 4.2 million swift strike. That’s 27%

a 7.9 million melee swing is proccing a 4 million swift strike. That’s 50%

It’s wildly inconsistent and doesn’t match the tooltip, on top of being just way too much damage. Go look at logs. Maybe it’s something to do with when the affix damage bonus is applied I dunno.

Swift strike is basically a 45% power melee auto attack.

Okay i get what you’re saying: its value has no relation to the ability that triggers it, just Rek’s damage.

Right, his melee attacks simply trigger an event for 45% weapon damage onto 2 targets.

Thanks, that does make sense now. The end result is still absurd and I guess it’s just overtuning then.

Yeah, idk why they increased it from 30% to 45% for this season.

Full dodges/parries do prevent the swift strike from happening. You can kite him back down the hallway since he’s slow, but that means doing basically no threat/damage. Really bad counterplay options though and amounts to just an unrealistic heal check.
