It was removed when TBC classic launched, because players where organizing to /spit on any players buying the battle pass mount. I think there was even an addon that auto did it.
Basically the community where shaming whales for being degenerates, and blizz got upset that negative stigma from the playerbase might cost them mount sales.
Bugs can go unfixed for 20 years, but make a paypig upset and daddy blizz will hotfix that so fast…
