Regional alphabet restriction

The restriction needs to be lifted.

  1. In the European region, you cannot play on a client with Russian language on French servers and vice versa.
  2. In all regions, you can only choose a nickname in the regional language.

I constantly Google and double-check the nicknames I come up with to avoid anything offensive. In English (which I don’t speak, even this message I’m writing using a translator), there are so many offensive words, and English-speaking people can get offended by something that is not offensive in my culture at all.

Please allow us to create nicknames in our native languages. Firstly, in Cyrillic, I can come up with a cool nickname that is not offensive to anyone. Secondly, I and other players will immediately see people who speak their language.

I would be very grateful for this.

By the way, I noticed that on PTR servers, inter-regional transfer of characters and progress from all regions can be done in a couple of clicks, and it takes a few seconds. So why is this not implemented on retail servers?

Got any examples?

Yes, there are examples, but I won’t write them here because I’ll just get reported.

I think this has to do with some weird Russian censorship laws, so they run a slightly different client (sort of like china).

No, it’s the same client. You just need to change the language in the launcher. Russian-speaking game worlds are not necessarily Russian game worlds the Russian language is spoken in practically all Eastern European and Central Asian countries.

The rules are kinda funny, like I’ve seen people named Helvete, for example, when that’s profanity in my language. Go figure.

Granted it’s not a major swear, but it’s still used as one.

This is exactly what I want to avoid. If I have access to a username in my native Cyrillic alphabet, I can be creative and ensure that I’m not offending anyone.

Can you Anglicize the name? Like, spell it in English letters instead? Or would it just look like gibberish?

I’ve done this with foreign words before, but now I just use the alt characters that they’re meant to use because I can(I use a lot of Swedish words and names).

My guess for why they don’t allow it, is that people can’t spell it, particularly in the west where we don’t use a Cyrillic alphabet. :frowning:

I find this prohibition strange because we have people with usernames like ÆÇæ

This is true. though those letters are also used in other western alphabets. First one is in Norwegian(Swedish equivalent is ä, which I use often), second one I see in Romanian but I’m sure it’s elsewhere. They can be replicated easily on a US keyboard with alt codes, and are standard ASCII letters.

That actually might be it. NA and non russian EU servers are limited to standard ASCII.

Regardless, I think it’s strange, but I’m sure they have their reasons. I just can’t understand them. Having played on EU, it doesn’t bother me outside having to ask someone what I should call them because I obviously cannot type in Cyrillic.

Cyrillic can be read as Latin and vice versa.
Here’s an example: Hedvig - Хедвiг (ua) Хедвиг (ru)

Neat.

Either way though, I hope that something is done about it but there probably won’t be, because it’s easier to leave it alone :frowning: I do feel for you though. I do know that a lot of people don’t like “foreign” words or names, particularly on the US servers. It’s dumb, imo.

Thank u

I’m so glad I found this thread. I feel like we should be able to name our characters in cyrillics everywhere outside of EU/RU realms. Naming policy and censorship can easily be implemented into the character creation (or by simply copy-pasting naming policies for names in cyrillic).

I saw lots of somewhat offensive names that use character/letter accents and it seems that policing has gone light on those nowadays. I think we should be able to name our characters like we did on PTR (I was happy I was able to use cyrillics with cases dialog window, which I was no longer able to do on American servers).

Let’s lift this restriction or have someone police or watch over the naming violation like the community does (sometimes).
