I currently have a PC running an intel i56600k and a GeForce 1060 3 GB.
Technically both are below the minimum requirements of WoW Shadowlands but I can only upgrade one at a time, some months apart. I was thinking of upgrading to a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti (Or AMD equivalent) and an AMD 5600X (or intel equivalent).
I currently have a 1080p monitor running at a refresh rate of 60 Hz and while I am quite happy with 1080p, 60 fps now but am looking to get a 1440p monitor once I upgrade my graphics card and processor.
The graphics cards are going to perhaps take some time to be readily available given the current situation. Both upgrading the graphics card and the processor (plus the cost of the motherboard) , would cost about the same.
I would welcome any of your suggestions, thanks in advance.
bottlenecking with a weak CPU and powerful GPU sounds better than the opposite to me, I don’t know how good old or bad that that i5 is, but it doesn’t sound too bad judging by the name… so I’d get rid of that weak 1060 first lol. I had 1080p 60fps for 9+ years after CRT crap, it’s okay but you definitely can’t go back after you reach 1440p 100+… and ultra wide… it’s crazy good, sharper screen colors and picture too… You should really upgrade your monitor as soon as you get that GPU… that GPU can handle so much more than 1080p 60fps, especially when you upgrade the CPU next. I would get a new monitor after the GPU and then a CPU.
this, but I would go monitor, then GPU (or both at the same time) then CPU. Otherwise you will have a GPU that’s complete overkill for the 1080p 60hz monitor and you will be paying for performance you won’t be able to utilize.
My wife’s laptop has the 6GB version of the 1060 and a 8th gen I7 processor. It gets over 100 FPS on “7” graphics settings with shadows on low. I bet upgrading the CPU would help more given WoW is a bit more CPU bound. The other consideration is…there are no graphics cards out there. in 3-6 months that should change. That will allow you the time to save for the upgrade.
