In the game world/lore, what has happened to these characters? Did they die, retire, or just disappear forever without a trace?

As far as “lore” goes, nothing has changed. For example, there’s not 4 million Maw Walkers as far as the NPCs are concerned, just one.

Lorewise they are sent to the Maw to fuel the Jailer. That’s why the Jailer too stronk, subs are bleeding.

They never existed.
If the character is famous, they may end up getting killed in-game by a random NPC, as the owner of the original Thunderfury was.

Lorewise, this is a single player game.
I do think it’s fun to toy with the concept of players who have their characters immortalized in the world, but then continue to play those characters.

My Mom passed away a few years ago. Her characters are still hanging around in our guild.
