Promise it is regardless of what you are typing out “bro” you guys are worth nothing more than a hard eyeroll with your fake outrage.
Ah so you are just here to troll then. Well thank you for your valuable input.
What if? It has been happening since the written word.
Yeah I never said this started in Shadowlands. As Hamstar mentioned above, this has been a trend that has been ongoing for a little while now. Most visibly noticed with a few things here and there in BFA but has been escalating quite a bit since, especially within Shadowlands. And honestly there is really nothing legally actionable about the green skins voice line. The removal of it is also directly along the same theme of the other changes they are making to sanitize this game.
I agree with most folks that “bro” humor can get really obnoxious, especially when it’s from the perspective of an adult behaving like a 10 year old. There are so many “jokes” out there that it’s hard to keep track of actual humor. I think about the “my sack is gigantique” achievement and I get the “joke” but the actual punchline just doesn’t land. Only children would actually laugh at that.
However, I do wish the developers wouldn’t take out voice lines or shift story beats to satisfy the incessant need to be politically correct.
It’s strange how current standards render Marvel movies to be more mature than World of Warcraft, as an example.
Superhero movies… characters that were originally written in comic books… for KIDS… have become less family friendly due to the language, heavy story ideas, imagery, and more. These movies touch on the subjects of social politics quietly in the background while also demanding the audience be prepared to think intently on what’s actually happening in the picture. And then they throw in a few strong words in there.
Plus, look at the new Suicide Squad movie, Deadpool, and Logan. Again, superhero movies. R-rated. Not that I’m all too impressed with those films, though the new Suicide Squad was enjoyable. It’s just silly to me how game developers are so afraid to make mature content.
I know that social politics and maturity don’t exactly go hand-in-hand as both sides have incredible behavior issues but it just seems like, to me, that Blizzard is trying to do something that isn’t actually doing anything. I’m not sure who this appeals to but it’s not like the players were up in arms over Trollbane calling orcs “greenskins.”
We’ll see what happens, but at least some of the dumb jokes within those achievements are being changed.
Welcome to 2021 my dude
Future generations will look back at us and just laugh.
Based on what? Are you a trademark litigator?
I said it “might” be the reason, and that it seems more likely to me than Act-Blizz being scared of the Woke Illuminati.
This.
Yeah I don’t see how that is even remotely as likely, let alone more. They are making a change to remove an expression of “racism” from a voice line after how many years of it being in the game, literally in the same patch that they are purging other “offensive” content.
And what exactly is the “woke illuminati”?
You do realize this is basically the entire education system in the south right? “States rights” (to keep slaves)
But the offensive content in question are bro jokes that seem related to the sexual harassment lawsuit. Your only other example from the OP is changing Every Man for Himself to Will to Survive, and that can be explained by the fact that the Alliance under Anduin became the good guys against Sylvanas’ Horde in BfA, when that change was made.
Just saying, all of your examples have explanations that don’t involve:
That phrase never made sense in the context of the game in the first place. Unless you think implying that a human member of the Alliance should be ready to abandon their allies at a moment’s notice when things get tough is in fitting with the lore…
You will probably just have to accept the fact that the “anti-woke” crowd are actually the minority. Not the other way around. If this stuff wasn’t popular, companies like Blizzard wouldn’t be trying to capitalize on it. Deal with it.
WoW has been around for over fifteen years. With every single patch multiple times a year since it’s release, some content went away or changed.
So many pieces of the game are no longer accessible including the entire pre-cata world.
But, a couple acheivement names and ability are erasing the games history?
It is impossible for me to understand being so freaked out about the removal of a sexist pun.
You are right on with one aspect though. The word nuerotic certainly does apply to some in this situation.
It’s not just bro jokes and what exactly does a lawsuit have anything to do with content that’s been in a game for years? Regardless, when I say a “small group of lunatic puritans”, I mean literally that. It’s a small number of players who are very neurotic and very obsessive and feel the need to express their moral panic profusely on the forums, in the feedback systems, etc. And for reasons mentioned above, among others, Blizzard capitulates.
So, with that said, what exactly is your “woke illuminati” you mentioned?
How about the complete deletion of Quinton Floyd’s voice work before he was even proven innocent as well.
Feel like they took out allot stuff or nerfed allot stuff people use to enjoy, lost allot people due to that, this will just lose more business for them, sure they will find another numbers scheme to show everything is ok though.
Yeah, that’s not how that works. Sorry.
I’m going off the examples you provided in your OP.
It isn’t “a lawsuit”, it’s a lawsuit in which the State of California alleges Blizzard fostered a bro culture that at best ignored and at worst directly abetted a culture of sexual harassment. They’re already scrubbing in-game references to people involved, not hard to imagine some bro jokes got caught in that PR net.
But here’s the thing: even if you were right, who cares? So they got rid of some bro jokes and racist dialogue, so what?
It’s a pure case of he said vs she said, she said, she said, she said, she said.
Even if we assume all his accusers are lying and he is telling the truth, it is still Blizzards decision to make whom to work with.
Even in Flynn’s argument that he is “innocent”, he admits to having virtual sexual relationships with fans.
It is entirely reasonable that a corporation may not want to be represented publicly by someone whom has that history.
The phrase did actually make sense but regardless, it was flavor and a part of the games history and was altered for obviously political reasons. And I don’t know anything about “woke” vs. “anti-woke” crowds, I could not care less, hence me wanting an escape from this toxic garbage as I mentioned in my original post.
When it comes to this game I know very well though that the majority of people are not “for” this, in fact most people don’t really care in the slightest one way or the way. So actually both of these “crowds” are the minority. And the obsessive neurotics who are making posts complaining about wanting things removed in this game are in fact such a tiny percentage of the population it’s almost negligible.
It’s this cost-benefit that drives corporations. They think it’s a win-win, because most people don’t care and a very tiny, very vocal, minority is complaining. Nothing to lose by capitulating, and only potential headache and bad PR from scorned customers by not.
But I do care, I don’t care about any one change, I care about the continued rewriting of the history of a game that I’ve played and enjoyed for a rather large period of time, for literally no reason other than to appease these very rare weirdos. So I am here to express to Blizzard that it’s not a win-win situation, there is a real cost to capitulating and making mass changes like this.
And in fact, if you read my original post, you will see that I don’t even have high hopes Blizzard will reconsider this path at all. So I have in fact “dealt with it”, in that I will move on eventually and I know based on my interactions that I am not the only one.
However big or small that group of people like me who care about the game is, the point of this post is to let Blizzard know it’s not a win-win situation and help them understand one of the reasons they are in fact going to lose subs through these actions. What they do with this information is entirely up to them, I’d like to continue enjoying this game and the Blizzard ecosystem as a whole but I am perfectly fine to move onto other things that actually are interested in retaining their genuine quality and history and providing something more than a soulless sanitized existence.
