Regarding Questie

Regarding the Questie add-on:

Do you think it’d be a good idea to dumb down one specific aspect of this add-on to help preserve the classic exploration and discovery aspects of the original game wherein quests that require you to go “specifically looking” for a quest item or object of interest aren’t automaticaly shown their exact locations? I mean, you could still show quest advice, markers, and locations for areas with group points of interest and/or mob spawn areas that require you to kill to complete the quest since they aren’t specific but rather a group thing. This would be a careful and monitored dumbing down of this add-on only in certsin “specific” aspects as pointed out without the need to remove it entirely.

This would have to be an across-the-board adjustment since “just don’t use it” means other players will have an unfair advantage over you.

I queried the authors about this too, except I asked if they could include a filter for this too to further customize the options already presented within their add-on in case this dumbing down idea isn’t possible.

So? Don’t use it. Personally I found it odd that the fargodeep mine was literally blanketed in quest markers.

I mean you dont have to use it

Without it all people did was alt-tab to Thottbot or whatever and get the coordinates and a picture.

Op actually did post on curse asking about this, and I appreciate that. I’m one of the questie developers and I figured I’d take the time to respond here about it. I’ve responded on twitch, but just so you guys know I figured I’d post it here too:

One thing I’d like to implement is a way to highlight certain quests that are lore heavy or important to read. A lot of quests are “Go kill 10 mean guys because they’re being mean” But some quests are really well written and have important lore, it’s a shame when people accidentally pass those by

It’s pretty much impossible to impose restrictions on everyone though, and frivolous. I’m all for more options, but when it comes to an advantage, people using a well crafted leveling guide will always blaze past someone using a quest helper and forming their own path.

For people who want to seek some things out themselves, it would be good to have an option like what you describe. For the people who don’t, they would just end up googling it or using another addon. It just wouldn’t work. I’ve tried to keep questie as plain jane as possible, and not include anything that might be too far like auto-accept (it’s still not clear what blizzard’s stance is on automatic actions like that)

Point is, I think more options is a good thing, but forcing them on people isn’t and wouldn’t work anyway

The day before I found out about Questie (and, thus, installed it), I found myself just kind of staring at the screen, trying so hard to figure out where to go, reading the quest 3 times, and feeling kind of sad, almost like giving up.

I considered other options… maybe ask to group with others for each quest… or follow others around and level by getting exp by grouping with them, even if we weren’t on the same quest.

I started to feel like WoW Classic might not work for me after all.

But then after I installed Questie, it’s kind of like having a GPS in the car. It’s incredibly valuable for someone who gets lost all the time (like me! lol)

Questie is enhancing my Classic experience. I did all of the original exploring and wasting hours upon hours back in Vanilla, and would rather not do that again.

I enjoy opening my map and seeing more and more yellow exclamation points open up all over the world - makes me feel like I’m in a huge world again.

Oh, wait, I just logged in and it says that Questie is disabled? I’m not sure if it’s just me, or if Blizzard is now blocking it? Oh, well. Must adapt and move on! lol

Decided not to use Questie for Classic. It is a good addon for what it does, Droodguy, but I found the exact quest addon I wanted in MonkeyQuest. I don’t want to know specific locations or where I can pick up all of the quests. Most of the fun I’m having is using my memory from Vanilla-Wrath in knowing where to go, or to figure it out from reading the quest text. I enjoy exploring around and trying to find new quests or running into interesting places that may not have quests involved. MonkeyQuest is just a better version of the default quest UI, lets me track quests without manually opening the log and shift+clicking them, lets me track more than 5 quests at once, shows level, and is quite customizable with the visual styles (have to download MonkeyBuddy to modify the options). I ended up using Blizzard-style options that are pretty similar to the current BfA quest tracker, albeit without the numbers and opening up to the exact locations on the map.

Quested with someone who was using Questie yesterday. They were actually newer to the game, started playing in Legion. I understood why Questie would be a benefit for them if they want to get quests done in a reasonable amount of time without having their memory to go back on, or constantly looking at WoWHead for help. I know I used Thottbot during the original release. Not for every quest, but if I was getting stuck or if I was trying to keep pace with my group mates.

Get the update. It was changed yesterday to .13 or something. It still works.

If the quest directions weren’t so terribly written in some cases I would fully agree with you.But in alot of cases I’ve come across the directions are too ambigous or in others completely wrong.

Ok, got it, thanks!

Hey, do you know if Auctionator also had a recent update? I got the same error message for both addons.

When I searched for Auctionator at Wowinterface, it just showed the same file I already have, I think.

I think from a logic standpoint, I’d still have to disagree with you here. It wouldn’t necessarily be a matter of force, it would just bea matter of whether or not to take countermeasures per blizzard’s part to improve the add=on/game so that people have to still find a specific quest objective/item were it to be specific. “Group” quest objectives can tracked just fine because they are randomized anyway usually within the blizzard engine (Mob spawn locations and even objectives seem to be randomized).

If you take a look at the coordinates, it doesn’t give you the pinpoint location either, as that would entail the use of larger #'s within the coordinates presented within the blizzard interface. Even if an add-on came out that would give more specific coordinates Blizzard could still monitor such an add-on or introduce code that would detract from it.

In the end, it’s about whether or not an add-on should be that powerful to provide specific guidance to all SPECIFIC quest objectives in the game without having to have to search for said quest item.

Must they look something up via a website like Wowhead, it would be on them, but the general idea is that it would be an added step. This is not an artificial implementation but would rather be a natural one in the right direction in line with Blizzard’s overall approach of no hands-free guidance with classic WoW as compared with retail.

I personally think everything should be slightly randomized, so the add-on optimally would provide a general area for the player to search in without it being too easy or too difficult. Thx for the reply though Droodguy.
