Refresher Course

A list of things you can’t be/do in vanilla (but can in retail) and therefore, can’t be/do in classic vanilla. This will help the selection process, since you’ll know ahead of time what isnt available. Feel free to add your own observations / remembrances. Without further ado…

I thought trolls could be druids in vanilla? I might’ve forgot but idk

Hunters must carry ammo.
You must train each weapon skills. And, you must - visit trainers in various cities for different type weapons.
Warlocks must carry shards.
Less bag space.
Less bank space.
Things don’t stack like they do now.
Mapping is much more complex.
You must go to a trainer as you level to get new skills.

aye so did i and thats why i made this list, so people wouldn’t be mentally prepping for something that wasn’t there in vanilla.

It is a little known fact, but Tauren CAN be rogues. They are the best rogues actually, because you can never find them!

haha. nope, no tauren rogues, even the invisible kind, in classic.

None that you can see anyway. Watch your back, a stealthed cow might be behind you!

most of those are actually good things for an rpg. its immersive. the refresher is for those things you cant be or cant do. rather than what you must do. hehe

Troll druids became a thing in Cataclysm.

Druid’s Entangling Roots cant be used indoors.

Hunters have a ‘dead zone’ where they cant shoot enemies with their ranged weapons because its closer than the minimum range of their bow/gun, but is further away than the maximum range of their melee weapon.

Hunters also use mana.

Hunter pets had to be fed periodically in order to keep them happy. Happy pets did more damage and needed to eat less. Unhappy pets did less damage and had a chance to break free from your tame and attack you.

Hunters could equip damn near every weapon in the game.

Hunter pets were unique and werent just “well this one is a cat, this one is a bear, this one is a bird.” You could get a Wolf in Duskwood that did shadow damage with its autoattacks, a cat in the Badlands that had the fastest attack speed in the game, and other unique effects if you spent the time looking for them.

Buying every single spell that the spell trainer offers you will often leave you penniless. New spell ranks can be incredibly expensive, especially at level 50+, where a single new spell rank can cost 4-5 gold.

You had to do attunement quests in order to enter most raids. Molten Core, Onyxia, Blackwing Lair, Naxx, even a Server-wide attunement event for Ahn’Qiraj.

  • Meeting stones can’t be used for summons.

  • hearthstones have an hour cooldown.

  • druids combat rez can only be used every 30 minutes.

  • rogues make their own poisons. You have to do a quest to get them.

Riding skill (60%) is available at level 40 and costs approximately 100g for skill+mount.

The rogue option for Taurens is right there on the selection screen.

Hitting level 10 didn’t mean getting a spec-defining spell. Enhancement shaman didn’t get stormstrike until level 40

Gnomes didn’t have their own starter zone, they shared one with dwarves

Trolls had the same deal as gnomes, they started at Valley of Trials with Orcs

Warsong gulch had no time limit, and the graveyard was not guarded by a fence

At level 10, Night Elf druids had to do a quest chain for bear form, ending in Darkshore where you need to kill a level 12 moonkin

Druids could not use pole arms

Reagents for spells are a thing. You tip the mage for his time and the portal reagent.

Not all spells are learned at a trainer. Some require books (drops) and some require quests. Paladin rez spell comes from a quest.

Some talent choices are wrong. You play a class, not a spec. You might be a 14/37/0 priest or a 21/30/0 priest. The numeric description assumes that you do it “right” because there are obviously many possible ways to do that (those are a “normal priest healer” and “divine spirit priest healer”).
