Why did Blizzard think it was cool to introduce reforging, see that everyone loved it, and then just tell us all to cry about it when they took it out?
In there own words
“The original intent behind Reforging was to offer a way for players to customize their gear, but in practice it offered little in the way of true choice. Players attempting to optimize every piece of gear were well advised to look up how they were supposed to reforge an item in an online guide or tool that had already determined the optimal choice. It added yet another step to the list of things that must be done to a new item before it was ready to be equipped, reducing the joy of getting an upgrade into a chore. If an upgrade drops, we want you to be able to equip it with a minimum of fuss. It is for those reasons that we’re removing Reforging from the game.”
At 56% Mastery on my Rogue I think reforging would be kinda helpful !
I miss it!
I’m trying to remember what they said, but I’m pretty sure “cry about it…” wasn’t it.
Doesn’t that mean that they should get rid of gear and specs too? They could just template you character for each type of content based upon what they wanted its power level to be in accordance with their balance plan. I AM KRUMTOILET!!!
To me, those words are out of touch. People already do this, heck there are websites guilds use with the help of things like Raidbots to show the approximate % increase beforehand. Now a lot of work is done beforehand anyway so I don’t get the idea of the “busy work” when gearing being minimized.
Reforging, to me, was one of the best systems introduced to build your character the way you wanted stats wise. Just because most people do what is “the best” doesn’t mean the options to give choice shouldn’t exist.
I was there for this entire era, and I really miss reforging. Sure, you generally had a best stat, but back then there were hit caps and such. Reforging/enchanting your gear, while laborious in Blizzard’s minds apparently, made each piece of gear your own, tailored to your specific spec and class.
Removing reforging does allow you to immediately equip most upgrades you get these days, but I didn’t mind having to tailor the piece before putting it on.
It should definitely come back.
The removal comes from this outdated idea that taking extra steps to make a new piece of gear worth wearing isn’t fun, which you could have argued was true when Reforging was first introduced; however, when the Grand Expedition Yak was released with a Reforging vendor on it (yes it used to be a reforger not a transmog guy) that inconvenience was heavily mitigated.
The truth is that if you care about stats, you’re already going to do whatever you need to to maximize ever piece of gear you’re wearing, and if you don’t, then literally no system around gear matters to you.
