Reflecting on WoW Classic and the Lost "Feel" of Retail

His profile shows he’s obviously playing the game. Instead of concern-trolling other people’s enjoyment of Retail, maybe recognize that the reason you Classic andies get so much pushback around here is that the stuff you’re pushing for is exactly the kind of design we found detrimental over a decade ago. You already got a whole game mode (several of them in fact) to suit your antiquated tastes, leave ours alone.

There’s nothing “small” about the suggestions in this thread. Saying that and accusing other people of gaslighting is wild. You’re the one literally saying that being granted 4 entire versions of Classic (for no additional fee no less) is merely a “bandaid.”

No - our voices are allowed to be heard every bit as much as yours. If you don’t like seeing us push back against your desire to turn Retail into more Classic, you’re free to go start a blog instead.

I appreciate the whole book you posted that is nothing but personal attacks.

This is you doing exactly what you accuse me of.

You can’t fathom any criticism of your Classic.

I’ll go against the grain: Classic is largely outdated and dull. It’s also a game that needs to be historicized. It was designed to respond to certain realities of the MMO market at the time. The typical player, the games they play, the design they expect/desire, and what makes games “good” has changed. There is no reason to pretend Classic’s design is “timeless.”

The degenerate forms of gameplay we see from the Classic community is a thousand times worse than anything they deride Retail for.

Hardcore is neat, though.

The issue is that everyone thinks their own version is “better”, lol.

I play both, and will continue to.

Just disappointed lately with TWW, otherwise I’d still be there.

Wouldn’t even be playing Classic in the first place if PuG content in Retail wasn’t in such a sorry and unforgiving state.

Retail is usually my game of choice- but it’s seen better days.

The problem is we all grew up. We all have our own families, jobs, kids, etc. There is NO way I could put in any amount of time I did in Vanilla-Wrath today. Especially vanilla. Times have changed. Games have changed.

I get what you mean about it being like a lobby but it is better for the game. People don’t have time to socialize in a 4 hr dungeon like BRD. Or a 2+ hour one like UBRS, LBRS, Scholo etc. I mean, if you look at Vanilla’s end game compared to today’s it is night and day. Vanilla’s only end game was raid or pvp. That’s it. Now, there are a lot more options for people without having to put in tons of hours a day.

Wildstar tried to be like Vanilla WoW and, well, it shut down a year after it launched. People don’t want that anymore. People want to log on. Do their stuff asap. Feel like they accomplished something. Then call it day.

You need to adjust to how mmos are today or get left behind because there won’t be another mmo like Vanilla (or EQ 1 which was crazy too) because most people who play mmos today don’t have that kind of time anymore.

bro just get on Roblox WoW mode fr fr on god

I do think there is a sizeable audience that loves the old stuff- I certainly do.

Otherwise we wouldn’t have people asking for it.

OSRS for RuneScape is another example.

There’s just probably not enough of these players alone though to support a wholly new ‘old-style’ MMORPG.

Also, there’s no microtransactions, and I hear that’s where the bulk of the money comes from these days- not subscribers.

One brutosaur = 6 sub fees, instantly.

So the mode can’t be milked, nearly as much. It just generates less profit.

Nonetheless I’m glad we do have it, because it was basically pure fanservice to bring it back.

Bellular’s estimation has no basis on factual numbers.

Bellular took the last official reported number of 5 million which occurred in mid 2015 and applied it to a graph in mid 2016. There’s no way to determine how many additional subs dropped during that missing year, so you have no valid estimation to begin the graph with.

Second, Bellular showed a marketing statement that Legion was performing slightly better than WoD. However he skipped the detail that said “time played” not subscriber count. A completely different measurement metric, should never have been used.

Then IGN and the rest took this misinformation-click-bait-video and spread it all over the internet.

And there isnt anything wrong with that, as long as people just be quiet and enjoy their game.

But aggressively being told I am wrong and a horrible person for enjoying retail?

I dont like classic. I am happy it exists for those that do. I dont initiate conversation saying people that enjoy Classic are wrong.

Its pure nostalgia.

that’s great.

and because blizz is apparently going to whip up some version of classic at semi-regular intervals, we can keep all the nostalgia / lore / RPG / ““feel”” there, and focus on interesting, dynamic gameplay for retail.

Maybe for some, but Vanilla has a lot of charm and fun gameplay people just love.

Retail just feels like some generic fantasy lobby ARPG now.

Doesn’t even feel like WoW anymore to me. The transmogs the current art team keep making are hideous and horribly out of place in the game

It’s not just that. The sheer volume of content now means that if you finish a questline now, it’s just a drop in the bucket, not a rewarding experience. So much stuff has been added to the game that you need to be equipped with a weed whacker to experience most of it.

I’ve been playing WoW since TBC, and the last time I actually felt like I enjoyed playing the game was Legion.

The game needs to give us something to work towards at max level. Something cosmetic and cool that gives an immediate boost to our character’s power.

The Legendary Capes in MoP comes to mind. The Artifact Weapons in Legion comes to mind. Most fun I had playing WoW was in those 2 expansions.

This is true. I think it’s neat to go back and play on occasion and see questing that we can’t see anymore.

This is also true. Dragonflight’s been a lot of fun. Aspects are some of my favorite lore spots in this game. (Second place to the Scourge/undead stuff).

I think it’s really great that we have both of these great options to play and we all can play the way that we have the most fun with!

So, not cosmetic, then. Those were very-explicitly not cosmetics, they were gear. Most people will not hit their BiS gear already, so you already have that to work on at max level.

More transmog stuff would be pretty cool. Maybe it doesn’t have to be end game, but more fashion is never a bad thing. I literally just got the dark ranger outfit on my BE hunter TODAY and … I’ve been wanting this outfit since like… forever!

Fashion is the true endgame XD
