Reclaiming Gilneas

A few quests , a mount , mogs , Is that it?

There’s also a toy to let worgens hearth to Gilneas now. But the zone is currently just what was left at the end of our old starting zone with some graphical updates, some NPCs in new places, a few areas cleared of enemies, and a few buildings closed off (notably the lighthouse where we executed one of Crowley’s allies.)

I’m guessing a few of the buildings are going to be repopulated eventually, but that by and large it was just an excuse to sandbag some worgen NPCs and give worgen players a ā€˜There, we did it. You have your city back, now shut up’.

A epic and longer campaign ending with a good cinematic and Genn being the main character of all this.
But they delivered few quests to kill random mobs, a depressive Genn and a new leader who is not even a worgen…

And she really should have been. Stupid heritage slap in the face quest.

I was just expecting more , a small city , a celebration with the Worgens they recover their land after all , a greeting maybe no ?

Tess also went for milk and smokes the second our back was turned. I’m sure she’ll be back any day now

They definitely could have done more. If I for some deranged reason were given control I would have designed it as such. (this is the short short version with lame shorthand dialogue)

1: ā€œWe’re going to reclaim Gilneas. The Blight has cleared and the Scarlets have taken it over. We should have never let them get a foothold but we were happy to see someone else fighting the undead for us.ā€ ā€œThe Scarlets are entrenched but we understand our home better than these recent arrivals. We know the secret routes, the back entrances, and the weaknesses in the defenses.ā€ ā€œCalia Menethil is trying to gain support among the Forsaken and has offerend a frontal assault against the Scarlets as a distraction, barraging them from range with siege weapons. The Forsaken are glad for any chance to kill the Scarlets so they might go for it, and I for one would be glad to have a Menethil leading that accursed faction.ā€ ā€œYou and the other Champions will be sent in by the Path of Bone, the underground path behind the defenses of Gilneas. Years ago the path was used as an escape route during the undead invasion. The undead got wind and flooded the tunnel, killing those trying to escape that way. Since then their foul necromancy has infected the place, making it a hideous proposal, but one the Scarlets would never see coming. We’re going to stock you and the other Champions up on water-breathing potions, let you fight your way through the hordes of Drowned, and sneak into the city. Once there do whatever it takes to get those gates open for Calia’s army! Once the main invasion is underway we’ll send our forces in through the maritime path, bombarding from the sea.ā€

2: PCs simultaneously battle their way through a dark, claustrophobic, and maze-like path reminiscent of the Hall of the Upside Down Sinners while being swarmed by never-ending weak undead. Undead can’t leave the water so it’s a fight and rush through the path. Lots of underwater sounds and glowy undead.

3: Once in the city you are in an alley. A cut-scene starts of Deathstalker Commander Belmont and Lilian Voss leading the attack as hundreds of undead bombard the Scarlet lines. Belmont: ā€œAh, just like old times! It’s good to lay siege to the humans.ā€ Lilian: ā€œNo, this is against the Scarlet Monastery alone, not humans. Not the Alliance. Even if we wanted to fight them, it would be suicide. As we are now they would wipe us out. You know that. I am sworn to protect the Forsaken, even if it means protecting them from themselves. Right now Calia Menethil is getting us closer to peace than ever before. All it took was a pretty face and a noble bloodline, and I for one intend to use her to our advantage. Even if it means making our people love her.ā€

4: Champions murder-hobo their way through Gilneas. A direct path takes one through big groups of elites. With a few PCs that’s doable but slow. There’s also a snaking route through Gilneas that is virtually undefended, going through buildings and alleys, if you explore a bit. Get to the gate and open it up to start the next cut scene, Scarlet Horsement charging the undead front lines, crashing into them with devastating effect (they are designed to fight undead after all). Just then the Scarlets receive an alert that there’s an invasion from the harbor! Just then the Champions assisted by Genn Graymane and ilk smash into the back-lines of the Scarlet assault, taking out their healers. Genn sees Belmont and almost chases him, but Calia steps in to focus him on his goal. With the Scarlet healers defeated and a pincer action on the Scarlet Cavalry, they are defeated and two armies rush in to destroy their remaining forces, but Lilian orders a withdrawal ā€œWe’ve done our part and craushed the Scarlet. Lets leave the rest to the Alliance before they start thinking about coming after us.ā€

5: The Alliance claims Gilneas. The Scarlets fight to the last in obsessed fervor. The PC has a final confrontation with the leader of the Scarlets who shouts ā€œYou have chosen damnation by siding with those monstrosities! You will regret your choice! We could have been the saviors of humanity! Instead you are the architects of its fall!ā€ Big fight of PC and Genn vs the Scarlet Leader (the battle they had was fine).

6: After battle have cut-scene focusing more on Genn being exhausted. ā€œI’ve been fighting for this for so long that I don’t know how to feel now that its done. I was hoping for joy from this, but I just feel empty.ā€ Genn goes to visit his son’s grave, where he’s visited by his daughter. They talk and hug and he hands leadership to her. ā€œI’m not the kind of leader that Gilneas needs. All I know is vengeance and war. You are the leader they need. You are young but can bring people together better than this old dog. There’s a lot of rebuilding to be done, a lot of curses to be lifted, and soured fields to be repaired. It’s not a quick nor easy path.ā€

7: Cut-scene of Alliance cheers at reclaiming Gilneas, showing your PC as well as a dozen other random PCs, among a large group of Gilneans and Alliance troops. Change to cut-scene of Forsaken cheering their victory against the Scarlets. Belmont: ā€œThus go all who would try to deny the Forsaken their existence!ā€ Lilian motions Calia to speak, knowing well what that means. Calia: ā€œThis is not just about sundering our enemies, this is about knowing some kind of peace. The Forsaken have been running and fighting for so long that I’m not sure they remember what peace even means. We have a chance for more than just an uneasy truce with the Alliance.ā€ Lilian backs her up: ā€œOur numbers have declined with every year. We must look out for ourselves lest we become a mere novelty to the Horde. The Forsaken require an end of conflict if we are to survive.ā€

7: Gilneas is now an explorable area. Most of it is roaming groups of Alliance troops hunting for stragglers, builders moving in to do repairs, and Gilneans moving back into their old homes and complaining about how the Scarlets trashed the place. Have the area filled with individuals with short conversations reminiscing. Even have a hidden Scarlet Scribe hiding in a closet that can be found and you are given the choice to kill them, turn them over, or let them flee. Make it clear that not all of them were terrible.

The thing I am most-disappointed about is that is is level-70 only! It should have been an event open to all levels! Why does a level-70 quest give 9500 XP?

Maybe? Given the time span that Blizzard takes to do things, I’d assume this might take place in… years? If ever?

The new Night Elf ā€œcapital cityā€ which is basically 8 buildings and 20 NPC’s, feels hollow and empty, so maybe this is just Blizzards mode now.

To be fair, at least you got your city back… Blizzard gave the Forsaken back their city… by taking away the death cloud and lumping all the NPC’s in the same area on a ramp… Super fun and exciting, very great work, Blizzard. Top tier stuff.

A title for worgens would have been nice. An actual armor set gilnean inspired instead of just fancy clothes.

Not all Gilnean are worgen and not all worgen are Gilnean. I don’t have a problem with a nonafflicted Gilnean being the leader.

I agree, another chick. Eye roll… lets bring back the war in warcraft … no flame… but flame…

Maybe because you are void elf? Worgen players seem to be caring a lot about these decisions.

well adding that 9th building or 21st NPC would have cost a raid tier…

Maybe its just me but what always sells me on Classic is the world building, not the uber intricate dungeons / raids and their mechanics, or the incredibly complex balancing - its just the actual world, the races, the classes, the feels not the numbers or the ge whiz that was a cool effect I had to run out of or into.

Still more than the worgen deserve.

Yeah on my posting character, I have many worgen.

ICly none of my worgen are happy with working with the undead nor do they want to work with any of the horde. None of them are happy Genn is stepping down and don’t think Tess should work with the undead, but they don’t dislike her for not being worgen.
