It still makes me mad that there’s no in world “event” that explains why the old portals broke.
At least we have trees burning and UC blighted, as a result of war, and death wing to blame for older world changes.
But Dalaran’s “portal genocide” ?! Even the laziest Dev could have put a sign up saying “at war with each other again? Get out of my city, you’ll find no help from us! – Uncle Kadghar”
But no. So whatever. Old content is obviously sliding towards the trash bin as far as Blizzard devs are concerned.
You know what was most refreshing about trying FF14? Running a dungeon with a pair of high-level players (who were scaled down to run with a lowbie like me), and them showing off some of their mounts that they got via questing. And realizing I can still earn those mounts, and do all those quests, because unlike WoW the FF14 devs don’t gut old content every expansion. They actually build on the same story, expansion after expansion, instead of going, “Okay, we’re done with that expac, gut it and paste a totally new story onto the end.”
Heck, these days I don’t even get to rely on my character staying the same from expansion to expansion, with how they keep reinventing the classes and taking away our rental-gear excuse for progression.
There are definitely aspects of FF14 I don’t like (travel isn’t one of them - heck, for a few gil I can just teleport to any hub I’ve attuned to!), but it’s so refreshing to be playing a persistent-world game that is actually developed as a persistent world game, rather than a bunch of stand alone games thinly held together by the fact they share a map.
To be fair, the state of the Cleft of Shadows was a problem in need of a solution as was the portals strewn all over Stormwind.
What is not a problem in need of solving is this idea that people won’t ever see other players unless Blizzard forces us to travel through the main and current faction capitols. The removal of portals throughout past expansions actually causes the problem Blizzard devs seem to be so concerned about, the world feeling smaller and emptier.
Just ran into several people in the old Legion Dal portal room looking for a way to get to theirs quests. I told them that they should have been working for at least people with quests. They were hoping they would be there given the maintenance, but nope. I will not repost some of the comments they made about the situation, lol.
“I’m on {quest name} and need to get from {place} to {destination}. There used to be a portal to take me there, but it’s now gone/removed/broken/bugged. Your CM’s said that old portals SHOULD BE ACTIVE FOR PEOPLE ON QUESTS THAT NEED THEM. Please fix, or better yet, just put the portals back the way they were.”
I personally didn’t a couple of them had said they did, while a couple others said they were going to put in some reports. I mentioned the forums, but they did not seem to like posting here as they figure Blizzard does not actually read them. But I said that you really never know. about 6 of us chatted a few mins but there were others coming and going that heard us and passed for a min and then left.
In ESO – a game which has instant travel to pretty much anywhere on the map via the wayshrine system, including dungeons and trials (raids) – I spend almost all of my time walking or mounted, and rarely use fast travel except to return to one of my houses.
In WoW – a game in which fast or convenient travel is, quite simply, a pain – I find the lack of portals and the difficulty of travel to be quite frustrating and annoying, and it seems like journeying to most places that I need to get to is unnecessarily time-consuming unless I sacrifice one Hearthstone or another.
So why is it that in the game which allows me to go literally anywhere with a mouse click, I do far more wandering around on foot or horseback than I do in WoW?
When Blizzard can answer that question, they might have a more thorough understanding of why the removal of portals in WoW is a tremendous inconvenience and the source of so much anger and frustration.
Three hints to get them started: content scaling, material node scaling, and the continued relevance of old zones…
I’m down to about two weeks left. I’ve moved on and embraced games where the developers actually listen and care about their customers. You know, the ones who keep buying their games. Those are their customers. Because when the players LEAVE your game, there is less money to be made. And that is the fastest way to lose your Investors.
Save for real life intervening several times, I’ve been a steadfast WoW fan since late Vanilla. And I’ve seen Blizzard slowly but surely going downhill, and they’ve grown worse and worse. I’ve spoken up, like many, hoping that they will listen and go back to the days when soon ( tm ) was a mark of pride.
When soon ( tm ) meant “the second it meets our high quality standards”.
Those days have been forgotten. And those who speak up against Blizzard want a return to those days. You seem content to see Blizzard continue on the same path they’ve been treading. That’s a yes man. You’re not helping them improve. You’re just agreeing with them.
You are the one lacking self awareness because you’re too busy agreeing with Blizzard to be critical of their work and call them out when they make bad decisions.
I mean, there certainly has been plenty of drama in this thread (and others) but that doesn’t invalidate the complaints. You seem to think that since this issue doesn’t bother you, it shouldn’t bother anyone–and that it won’t affect you either way.
But, as others have pointed out, this is just one more symptom showing how badly the game is being managed. When enough folks give up and leave, you won’t have time to gloat before the servers are shut down. Is that really what you want? Or do you want a fun, vibrant game like the rest of us are asking for?
You should step back and take a good hard look at what’s really going on here. Because most people here aren’t being negative just for the heck of it. And that’s really something that should make you think.
You are one of the precious few that aren’t, honestly, most of the Portal Brigade here is simply cancerous. I’m sympathetic to some of the the criticism of certain changes, e.g the portals to Azsuna and Jade Forest are kind of puzzling.
But the toxicity from around 6 or so users in this thread is just unbelievable, and has done your cause far, far more harm than good.
Well said. It’s actually unbelievable how people think these days. The portal change doesn’t affect me much but I am still here to help because I can recognize people have an issue with it. I am literally fighting for everyone else here. Not even for me.
It’s almost like other people play this game or something.
Exactly. Flying wasn’t a problem in the game until the devs MADE it a problem. They announced that flying was going to be removed from the game and would never come back during WoD and it resulted in a mass exodus of subs…so much so that shareholders demanded Blizzard to recant and keep flying in the game. Their “solution” was Pathfinder which made it mind numbingly tedious. Then they had the oh so wonderful idea to make it even more frustrating by adding Pathfinder part 2 by means of rep grinding to gate it even more. For the last few expansions, we’ve had to wait almost a year before they bring it back, only to have them introduce a new zone of content that surprise surprise we suddenly can’t fly again. We had an 8 month wait in Legion, then we got to fly for about a month, and then we got the Argus patch…where we couldn’t fly -_- Now here we are in BFA only a few months shy of a year after launch and still no flying. I refuse to even log in to do anything more than help my wife with group quests while she levels up alts until flying comes back. I’m not going to bother subjecting myself to the same quests and storyline for all of my alts until we get Pathfinder 2

Actually, they do care at least a little bit if you log in because they report “time played” to the share holders. That’s probably why we don’t have flying and all the portals were removed–to make us waste time getting places so Blizz can brag on how long players are logged in.
We’re not the ones who are overreacting; especially as there is no post like you described.
Please stop trying to derail this thread.
Thank you.
No hair flip.
