Really annoying fps drop in arenas

i used to get 200+ FPS all the time in arena… this xpac UHDK goes, SP void explosions, lock portals, mage aoe crap, all the pets, random drop my FPS to like 20 in arena… its really annoying. i have a 3090 and have lowered a few settings already just to see…

is there anything specific to stop this? or everyone gets the frame drops during big aoe in arena now? is it just wow running on outdated coding? or what

3090 should handle all of it. I’m using a 2070 and I do fine in raids/epic BGs at max with everything going. The 2070 is getting older though.

Are u running:

Render Scale > 100%?
Ray Traced Shadows > Disabled?

I’ve seen odd performance hits playing with these. Particularly Ray Tracing with some spells. But, again, I am using an older 2070. I use Anti-Aliasing…CMAA or MSAA or both. I use both on at max with no problems.

What about drivers? Nvidia has had some wonky drivers lately. I’m using the 552.44, which is a couple months old. The newer ones seemed to have so many issues. You can search around to find info about that if you’re curious.

Sometimes tech is just weird too. But you should be sitting at a 10 with most of the bells and whistles with a 3090.

Ohh one more thing, screen resolution can impact. I’m sitting at a 40" or so running just 1920.1080, so nothing fancy. 4k and all the other stuff, maybe that affects things too?

Ohh ohh, is this 3090 in a laptop? Those can be a bit wierd too.

Someone I play with also has lag everytime he enters the arena. No other game affects him like this. Interested in the results.

Thinking back to my experiences, the only time I got weird lag on my system(s) (we have two that are the same), it was when using Ray Tracing. Odd lags at some rendering: spells, locations, just odd. I turned it off and just use Anti Aliasing. But the 2070 was the first ‘RTX’ so maybe that affects what I have seen.

I have gotten weird stuff with some of the Nvidia drivers. For years I just upgraded the drivers, but since Nvidia has entered the AI market, it got weird enough I check the Nvidia forums new driver feedback now before I test a new driver. Now I find a solid stable Nvidia and wait it out till the next one, which is a shame.

Finally Rendering Scale was taxing on my systems. But, my screen resolution isn’t too heavy, and my system is a few years old.

Looking froward to the 5070s and hearing good stuff from the other makers. I’ll probably just get a pair of 5070s when the come up and new Motherboard and what not a year or so after.

Anyway, that has been my exp. Maybe it helps.

ray tracing has been off, render is 100%

What your screen resolution?

What drivers are u using?

adding in that ice wall still drops frames for certain gpus (or maybe its just certain gfx settings) in 2024 despite being added years ago

its probably poorly optimized code/libraries/engine

2k resolution, i play warzone at 140 fps easily.

newest nvidia driver

Laptop or desktop?

desktop. 10900k and 3090 evga, 64gb ram

arenas in DF and earlier were 200fps almost always i think.

they dip here a lot in tww…

not sure if maybe its an addon?

That system should do very well.

My experiences will not help you.

But I have a thought. Perhaps you can get some friends together for a test arena and find what triggers the fps drop and play with some settings?

I won’t say it is the latest nvidia drivers, but I have had some weird issues with them, including odd stutters and random slow downs. You can check the nvidia forums, but you may also consider rolling the nvidia drivers back to a different version that may be more stable? That could be a test you do too.

Here are the nvidia forums:

Edit: I was typing while healing, doh! I do wish ya luck. Sorry my ideas did not help.

its when theres a bunch of spell animations all over the screen at once. its kinda like the FPS drop in Epic BG’s with 50 people spamming spells

Hmmm, even with my older system I don’t generally see that. Sometimes I do when toys are thrown in, but a combat with 4-6 people I don’t remember seeing any FPS drops. Maybe I am not paying enough attention? Maybe the FPS drop is not enough for me to really notice?

Dropping from 200 fps to 20 is extreme though it seems to me. I have run out of basic ideas. Keep up looking/testing and good luck.

I’m running a 1660 nvidia with a i7-2600k cpu. 16 gigs of ram and I don’t lag at all. Strange that you are.

My pc is ancient

Make sure antialiasing and all that isnt on 16x.

Could also get a program called Display Driver Uninstaller to completely wipe out old versions and reinstall, helps some things.
Could be an addon too.

Good points Spruce. Addon maybe, and if ya do roll back a driver there are recommendations re: driver unistall for nvidia so you get a clean.

Ohh have you tried a UI reset?

Maybe your cache or something is wonky?

do u have to setup your whole UI / addons again if u do a ui reset?

I’ve been lagging this entire expansion compared to end of dragonflight. I have no idea what causes it as I only use 1 addon(bigdebuff) and all my settings are the same

Possibly an addon or w/a that is used in arena that is outdated and causing issues.

is there a way to auto update W/A ? didnt think of that
