Real Talk - Why the Streamer hate?

I’d argue that people aren’t necessarily getting dumber as much as the internet is just exposing stupidity more.

All of us were idiots when we were kids, but we were idiots in private. When I was 14 my stupidity wasn’t broadcast to world over Facebook and Twitter. We had Myspace at best.

I remember when people used to talk about how video games in general were “mindless drivel”.

I can understand some of the views here, but like, tips for example. He’s getting hate but I’ve (in the few times ive watched) never seen anything bad?

They crash things?

Maybe you just only look for the worthless Dbags none of the ones i watch would fit that description.

A bit OT but I kind of cringe when people post every single thing their kid does on facebook, like, you know that stays there forever? I know they mean well (or hope they do) but it just bugs me.

I personally love watching streamers. Esfand in particular.

I think the issues are as such: streamer communities can be overbearing and toxic (i.e. see Asmongold’s following), their special access to anything Blizzard related if they’re on good terms, and the fact that they are getting paid to sit down and play video games while others simply can’t.

Some of the streamers certainly act or sound high and mightier than the rest, but those are very far and few between the majorly helpful ones. Those helpful ones don’t deserve the hate.

Personally I just find them annoying, obnoxious, stereotypical millennials. I’m also not a fan of watching people play games. I do like SovietWombles edits on youtube, but he is actually funny.

Tips has a video from a few weeks ago titled “FIRST BETA SCREENSHOTS!!” and is talking today about the alpha he played a few days ago.

It would be pretty silly to give beta access to streamers first, make it exclusive and leave everyone else in the cold. If people really want to play that badly up until release date they’re just going to go play on a private server anyways…

I’m old enough where there is NO record of some of the stupid stuff I have done aside from a photo here or there.

Beta has recently become a tool for advertisement for World of Warcraft, so… It makes sense from their point of view and none from ours. Besides, everyone is aware private servers are miles behind even the beta right now.

They have a platform the average player does not, what “bias” is there against them, they get views. I don’t like them because the average streamer is an annoying know-it-all AT BEST. Given I haven’t seen every streamer, but I’ve got a taste of the culture and it’s not to my appetite. Just because you know all the current news and can even play the game well doesn’t make you anything in my eyes. I’d rather talk to an RL friend about the game if I want to talk WoW.

They are occasionally good for news, but I’m not subscribed to any because I’ve really really really gotta be in the mood to watch a video about a video game instead of just playing said game.

I’m young enough that Facebook was a thing when I was in college.

There are…some things out there about me that we shall never speak of.

Big yikes. Lord.

I don’t hate streamers in general, some of them I enjoy watching, especially the wholesome/humble ones. Some just breed obnoxious fanbases and others are obnoxious themselves.

But I think they should be left in the dark like the rest of the devoted fans out there. Blizzard can build their own hype - in fact, it’s something that they excel at.

I love talking about streamers non-stop. Whether it’s explaining why I hate them, or asking why others hate them, as long as we’re talking about them I’m good.

Watching streamers play games is out. The new meta is talking about people who stream games on the game forum they’re streaming.

Please get out there and do your part, if we just made 6-7 posts each about streamers on the forum, I think we could really make a difference.

Really not sure what I am and am not allowed to say on here, but after playing the realms that they temporarily released during BlizzCon I can tell you that they’re not really all that far behind what Blizzard is releasing at all…

My teenage years was all pre-computer. Well…not true. I had an Apple IIc in high school.

It must be because I am of the older crowd. I watched streamers for the first time today, I toggled back between the major ones that were spouted on this forum. I cannot understand how people can follow and watch these people.

I am a gamer. I love to PLAY my games, not watch someone who is “okay” at playing these games play it for me.

Again. I am from the older crowd and do not understand.

I used to perform crazy stunts on stuff before it was a thing. I remember my father recording my run through super mario bros on NES via VHS to take it to his peeps at work. I remember sending pictures to gaming magazines of high scores and getting in magz. I remember performing feats in games like Fire Emblem and people who play the game adamantly scratch their heads and say I was lying.

I remember breaking every crazy speed leveling on DAOC by not just 10%, but by like 90%. I remember being a chinese gold farmer before Wow was even created.

So, I have no idea why people like to watch other people play a game that they can play themselves?

Maybe when you get stuck, research a vid on youtube to help you figure something out… I can understand that. But to watch some neckbeard in a basement, eating cheetos and drinking the DEW for hours a day doesn’t seem to be a great form of entertainment IMO.

And If I were to ever want some info, I prefer to just read it concisely, instead of having someone else in a video explain it in 15 minutes which I could have read in 30 seconds.

serious question though…

Do people watch these dudes because they aren’t good at the game and want to see others that are good ?

I never watch streamers until today. I went to one referenced streamer who had a video up. That was like 2 hours ago and the video said if you hadn’t got a beta invite by now, you wouldn’t. So I got the impression he had inside information, but now I don’t think so. Why a popular streamer would say that, I have no idea, but it is that sort of thing that could possibly turn people off.

I see no value in watching a beta streamer running on foot all over Azeroth trying to level his character - boring. :weary:
