Real talk; how many of you actually ENJOY starting all over constantly?

This is a genuine question; I’d legitimately like to hear where you guys stand. I’m starting to wonder if I’m just in the minority here?

I’ve always loved MMO’s, and especially love the feeling of constantly building, collecting cool items, things like that. When I’m really into a game, I tend to be kind of a completionist. WoW obviously has a ton of things to potentially do, and in Vanilla particularly, a lot of things can be very time consuming.

Something I’ve found myself pretty “frustrated” about Classic is the more “seasonal” aspect it seems to have. You can say that Era is permanent, but that’s not necessarily true either; Season of Mastery brought in a tabard completely unique to Vanilla and it transferred to Era, so there was yet another incentive to abandon the notion of “permanent” characters in favor of seasonal ones.

Then you had SoD – which I personally enjoyed – which brought loads of new, rare crafting recipes to acquire. Something you could pretty easily sink hundreds of hours into trying to acquire, only to wind up on a dead version of the game.

Now for me, I find myself kind of sick of “starting over”.

But then maybe I’m alone in that? Maybe you guys all enjoy the constant “fresh start”, in which case maybe Classic just isn’t for me after all. Maybe you guys prefer more short-term experiences, over one long-term one?

I feel like I’d be more on board with “seasons” if you still got to play your existing characters, and walk away with something to take back to “Era” for them. But hey, if you guys are totally on board with the more temporary model of gameplay, then it would be good to know if I’m just really that disconnected from the rest of the playerbase?

I prefer starting over and think people who like collecting are weird. If you like collecting play retail.

Classic isn’t for you.

Then why do you do it?

You could be playing retail right now, and saving all of your ‘progress’ from the very beginning.

it’s about the journey, dude :expressionless: not the destination.
at the end of the day, you cherish the memories you made. not the digital 1s and 0s on blizzard’s servers that represent your character.

Meh I like both. I enjoy having a toon with the achievements and items but I also like growing characters and progressing through content.

I’m returning to vanilla anniversary just for fun but I do feel like I’d rather have my character persist through Vanilla, BC, and WOTLK. Then server just stays at Wrath. Then I’d just create alts. I’m not sure I like my character just being reset. I guess if it goes to Eras i wouldn’t be too upset, but I’d rather we just stay frozen (Ha!) At WOTLK.

Whether this makes sense or not, I don’t know I’m still getting used to playing WoW again but that’s just how I’m feeling.

Weird take from someone who argued against fresh servers.

long as they are land locked on their own type of server its fine.

Every version of wow should have an “Era” option, you are not alone in being sick of progression / seasonal.

People wanting a forever classic server that is ever evolving are deluding themselves

This type of game is impossible for a game like wow that is based off of a strict lore/story

There will never be a “forever” level 60 classic game because

  1. power creep - players will demand further content but they dont want content that does not up player power. at a certain point the difference between a tier 12 player and a tier 1 will be monumental
  2. runescape is a game with no actual fixed story and can constantly progress due to its scaling. That scaling is too slow for classic plasyers who are focused on end game raids and not everything else in between
  3. classic+ will just be a seasonal server
expansiopns are literally required for what these people are asking for

I mean, it’s just a very different experience. For one, I always hated the post-Cataclysm old world, but also zooming around on a flying mount at mach-4 speeds just makes the world feel… I dunno, sort of “flimsy”? And the gameplay is also very, very different. Not necessarily “bad”, but not quite as much something I enjoy (and the one-button rotation is only going to make things worse, imo).

I’ve never argued against fresh servers, and I have no interest in learning what post of mine you misunderstood to come to that conclusion, so don’t bother finding it :expressionless:

It’s not so much specific resets, per say. It’s more there are so many game modes that are on their own independent timelines that it makes for one big uncohesive mess

Era, Anniversary, Hardcore, SoD, MoP…also people asking for Era TBC, Era Wrath, the new Titanforges servers we may or may not get…

You have to reroll a new character every time which is effectively a forced character reset that detaches you from your other character(s)

The original Era → TBC version made a ton of sense. It’s just a shame they didn’t preserve that same philosophy moving forward.

I could see something like Diablo’s “Rebirth” system maybe being a better fit, or really even SoD’s idea of “lower level-caps” was a fun idea that made it a lot less painful to had to grind. Although I pretty much always start losing steam around the time I hit Redridge Mountains, so I was never going to be the biggest fan of “season” stuff.

I could see doing it if you got dropped at lvl 55+ and just focused on dungeon/raid progression, though. Group play has always been the heart of any MMO for me, and there’s just nothing enjoyable about questing by yourself.

Every expansion release is a “starting over” cycle. To an extent, each phase is as well, though I think this was much less felt prior to expansions, where the gap continues to grow…

There are so many facets to this game, that every so often the leveling process is something that I look forward to again.

:woman_shrugging:

Because classic is 100% fueled by nostalgia. Starting over and over is like their fix. They need to recreate that feeling of brand new chsracter world poor no gear everyone leveling up. Once a clsssic meme mode is done they ask to start again because there is nothing else, no endgame.

I am of another disposition. I lie starting over in HC, but only because I know my progress is mine so to say. It’s not dependent on any dates or deveopements or expansions. If I do not play for a week, a month, or even a year, my toons will be exactly where and how I left them when I return.

In other words, it’s not the starting over in and of itself that bothers me, but the progress being reset, annihilated or whatever word to use, when/if the realm goes on to an expansion I won’t play (Cata!), so Era servers to any and all expansion would suit me just fine.

Just do what warmane does. Have an era realms and a prog realm when the prog realm ends move the characters to the era realm and start it again. For every xpac

Can you play at the Era realms there, or are they just for “storage”?

I think constantly starting over is only really appealing if you like leveling alts. That definitely applies to a lot of folks, but it definitely does not apply to a lot of other folks. Myself included.

I don’t want to start over. It takes me a long time to play a character to the point where I feel like I want to switch to an alt. I was very happily playing on my Resto Druid that I made in 2019 and the only reason I switched to Ret Pally is because we were over on healers and what’s just what I had kicking about.

I’d make another char for TBC Era if Blizzard released that, but these seasonal approaches of full reset and accelerated timeline are completely lost on me.

They have the largest era realm. 30k active people and no layers dal is fps drop city.
