As with last time, I’m glad that way back when I merged my throwaway bnet account and proper Warcraft account it took the made up name from the bnet account.
i think i have had it disabled for awhile now. i wouldnt want my real name out here unless i could control who sees it. Like on FB no one can search for me or find me unless i personally link them.
There is just someone out there i do not want finding me EVER! true statement,
If my real name is posted on the forums then I’m done posting. I don’t want every Joe Alliance knowing who I am. I had a problem with this crap way back when. Just another bad decision that Blizz is making. SMH, when will it stop?
Real names on forums =
I know I was here for the (expletive storm)
It was all most as bad as no more flying
Yep they did…
At a minimum they need to use battle tag for fourm imo
Would you be so kind as to point me in that direction so I too can do it?
Thank you.
I wouldn’t mind knowing Grumbles Real-ID So I can steal some of them cookies.
I signed out and back into the battlenet app, and it made me accept the new agreements 5 minutes ago.
This. Wow… not good.
Battle.net Account Settings>Account Privacy
Sad that we have to iterate on this abomination yet again.
Does anyone here understand the reason the Mandatory RealID was scrapped?
Do any of you know who Micah Whipple is or rather was in the context of WoW?
For those of you who do not a refresher is in order.
Micah Whipple was a forum moderator on these forums. He screen name was Bashiok (yes the tree guy). When Real ID was implemented the first time, Bashiok turned it on for himself. 24 hours later His real name home address and pictures of his family were dispersed across the internet.
Lets let that sink in a moment shall we?
He was one of the first gamers (and a Blizzard Employee to boot) to be doxxed.
EDIT to add: That was 2008/2009 era. He is currently the director of communications for inXile Entertainment. The above incident and several mainstream news articles in that week and a forum hugh and cry that made the Flight Debate in WoD look small by comparison caused Blizzard to scrap that policy. And for good reason. It violates the privacy laws of several countries and it violates several federal privacy and reporting regulations in the United States including but not limited to Sarbanes Oxley, HIPPA, and others the way it was implemented (the mandatory part is what gigged them). We do not need a resurgence of that.
Login to your battle.net account. Go to the Account Settings page. Navigate to the Account Privacy section, click on the word update and uncheck the box that says RealID Enabled if it is not unchecked.
Blizz seems to think otherwise. I am sure blizz employees will be exempt from the realid thing of course.
Oh no…It beat No Flying by a country mile. I cannot recall what the Primary Flight Threads reached as far as post count but the RealID trebled or quadrupled that in one weekend (this was prior to and responsible for the change to the forums web design to include a thread cap of 500 posts)
And the way that it was implemented years ago (mandatory implementation no way to opt out) was quite quickly pointed out to be in violation of existing US law as well as exceedingly dangerous to consumers.
They way this is worded and implemented now (opt out option available) is probably within the letter of the law but I think it is still a bit dodgy
Well, you do use your real ID on Facebook, did you lose your job?
How about other social platforms?
I don’t use Facebook Or Twitter. The social platforms I do use I mask my personal information and the platforms have abilities to do just that. In addition if I really needed to use one of the opened social platforms like facebook I would invent a legend that would suffice to get around identification by that platform.
On Facebook, you cannot hide your name, but yes, you can make your account private and choose if your post can be public or private.
So over 10 years later, they think the worst idea they’ve ever had is a good idea?
You don’t read very well I take it? I DON’T USE FACEBOOK. AT ALL. Never had a Facebook Account or a Twitter account.
