Real ID part 2

Real ID on the forums is indeed a problem.

Aside from the issues you listed, imagine having your name and address on public display as a woman on the internet.

Gonna have a lot of greasy stalkers walking around your neighborhood.

I have never encountered this kind of problems…
Did you?

People did this in the SWTOR community. Because the community is so small everyone knows each other personally.

So beef in game typically leads to doxing.

Not me, I don’t pvp. Other people? Ohhhhh yeah. People take money and video games very seriously.

I believe it.

No… it happens. I had someone on a public Facebook forum threaten me with physical violence for helping another poster and me telling her that what she was contributing wasn’t doing much for the question at hand. Someone else who worked with me reported it, that person is no longer with the company.

For certain forums, anyone posting or replying to a post may be doing so using their Real ID – that is, their full first and last name – with the option to also display the name of their primary in-game character (see discussion regarding Real ID below). If your personal information is posted on one of our community forums, you may contact us at dataprivacy@blizzard.com to request removal. Sometimes, we may not be able to remove your personal information, in which case we will let you know if we cannot do so and why.

By participating in Real ID, you will have the option of making your real name visible to your friend’s friends, who will also be able to invite you to become friends. The controls for Real ID are located in Battle.net account management.

I mean there is only 1 place to manage real-id in Bnet account and mine is disabled. SO it better not show anywere…

Personally I liked the part where they said they might use voice chat transcriptions to monitor player toxicity…

Down side?

This is weird: threatening someone is illegal.
If a coworker have lost his job because he was defending someone who got threatened, then he could have sued the company. If that happens, just call the police.

I feel like my employer would fire me just for playing WoW…

Often, particularly in medical/legal fields, games playing was viewed as indications of unreliability or childishness. That stigmata has lessened, but is not completely gone.

I am 100% opposed to real names on the forums of all places but I do think that a player’s battle tag should be used when posting on the forums. I also think that all things should be tied to a battle tag instead of individual characters (IE: TL3, posts, likes, flags, etc)

The forums using/showing peoples first and last names is silly and I would argue also a bit dangerous.

Agreed, @Byucknah. One of the first things covered on the internet has been not to share real identifying information with people you don’t know, and a forum (public or ostensibly private) will do exactly that.

I would rather have them use first and last names but this would work also

I’d rather this not be a thing, I get enough threats from other people already.

I personally wouldn’t mind a first name thing, but I know others have a good reason to. I just don’t care if people know my first name.

Hi guys, my name is Donnie

Using real ID on these forums would be a terrible idea and would just lead to people not wanting to post at all.

I know some people will say “so where’s the issue?”, and it’s that the forums will basically die out because nobody wants their personal information out there where anybody can use it to stalk them because they upset their feelings over the internet.

Yup! Never share personal information online with those you don’t know. Also, There is already a few Blizzard Forums that utilize your BattleTag already.

BattleTags I’m not against, But I am against having my real first and last name posted on the Forums.
