Re:Texture

Trying to clean up old textures of Vanilla.
I was sure that I will do this to all races, since people so much against toggle for new models.
At least I thought that maybe I retexture old models and just will send them to Blizzards for free, so I would get more joy to play old races…
But I did about 50% of one orc skin and already feel that I will not be able to do this. Cause it’s so time consuming.
But I will try to do this for as many as I can, and maybe I will pull it off somehow (I’m not sure about this).
I’m trying hard to preserve details and colors of original skin, fixing only anatomical weirdness here and there. All textures originally in 512, so I made them twice as big. There are still blurry details which I will sharpen more.

I will finish this one (only 50% done) and maybe start another. But again. This is so time consuming and there are 8 races and around 7 skins from every race. Maybe just placing one fixed skin under the color variation of other originals variations will cut the time…

Unless people will be even against this? Iunno. I would like to play in classic at least with updated textures of old races. Where they don’t have stretched pixels over their faces and seams all over their body parts.

Editing game files and using them in an active client is a violation of the Blizzard Terms of Service, and will result in a permanent or temporary ban of the account.

Attempts to modify the game client resulted in a harsh ban structure that was only rolled back due to unintended recipients. However, even those unintended recipients were warned that if they continued, Blizzard would ban their accounts permanently.

Anyone using the textures you’re changing is likely to be banned going forward.

Did you miss the bit where he said he was going to send them to blizzard so that they could elect to use them, or throw them out. At no point did he mention distributing them so that players could load in the textures individually.

Reading comprehension fail.

yeah but thats a bit too stupid to believe.

Wow, nice job, Blizzard should interview you for an art department job Bananaynay.

I’m going to repaint the Mona Lisa so I like it better, then submit it to Leonardo da Vinci. This is because I feel his rendition is not clean enough. I’m sure he will use it, and original piece will become rubbish.

Cause they don’t have their email address listed under “Contact Us” on their website…It’s not some unimaginable feat.

That is not the problem xD

I hate that this is a thing that blizzard does however, it is their game and their policies that they enforce so not much can be done other then do deal with it or get a job a blizzard, then head the WoW Division (something like that) and change it yourself.

Ah huh. Sure.

Blizzard has the updated textures. They don’t need, nor would they legally use, someone else’s work. I read that bit as an attempt to cover the usual “I’m making an outfit texture for RP” problems.

You can’t really presuppose someone else’s intent. If he plans to distribute them to circumvent the ToS then he, and anyone who uses his modified files will be punished. If he sends them to Blizzard with the stated intent that they can use them at will, then legally they can. Most likely they just toss them in the garbage can and nothing comes of it.

Guess I just don’t understand the open hostility to what is at best, a neutral post that bears no impact on your life or your WoW Classic experience.

And that’s why I simply laid out the consequences of those actions.

I’m not sure where you get “open hostility” from especially since:

I used to do this back in the day, any editing of the mpq (or these days casc) files is against the tos, you can only add new files (like sound and music) by creating new folders with the same file paths. This way Blizzard allows modding for some files but not all of them.

If you can’t replace any textures by creating new folders then you are not allowed to modify the files that are already there.

There is a job out there which called — " Art Conservationist". The jobs description: restore/conserve old paintings. And Mona Lisa, I found out, was restored at least once (other not experimental paintings of other artists restored plenty of times, cause colours are fading and destroyed eventually if they left under the air and sunlight which is everywhere and you can’t conserve paintings otherwise).
And I’m not destroying old textures, they are still there, I’m creating “new” textures. ANd use them or not is Blizzards deal. If they don’t need it, I won’t say anything. I’m a bit tired already to fight with people who don’t want me to get toggled option of new models with better official textures.

I’m not modifying files in game. these textures aren’t going anywhere from working folder. I don’t use them in my game (I even don’t know how, I’m technically not very experienced). I just used wow model viewer to extract FBX and get textures, which I also could get from inrented sources.

Good luck! I wish people didn’t get worked up over having a model toggle but either way it won’t stop me from trying classic~

Hey buddy from the other graphics threads

Yes, I would still be against this. Again, the stated goal of Blizzard per their own published article is an authentic experience, that, to literally quote them:

Source: World of Warcraft Official Website
Date: November 3rd, 2018
Article Name: Restoring History: Creating WoW Classic Panel Recap

…the game should still look and feel like you’re playing World of Warcraft from 2006. Things like combat equations, original models, and hunter skills are certainly part of that…

Which myself and the folks looking for as authentic of an experience as possible would agree with. Therefore, no “touched up” textures. I understand that Blizzard is unable/unwilling to put in the effort to make everything 100% classic, and it’s a shame. But, absolutely they shouldn’t go out of their way to make things non-classic by doing something like this.

They look pretty good, but I wouldn’t waste your time thinking they will actually use them.

Blizzard did not have the art for the original models. They discussed which models to use, they decided on the original vanilla models. The artists then re-created the old vanilla models.

The models in Classic are new, re-created to be exactly like original vanilla. The decision was made a long time ago.

I understand.
I also think that this will not go to the official build, but at least it will be some sort of refreshing skill practice for me.

It will be awesome practice for you, if you are doing it for that reason it is great.
