Yesterday when I was in Tempest Keep, a large egg appeared in the control room while I was battling the 5 final bad guys. I blasted it, the top broke off…and it vanished. Today my brother was in the same battle, and a large egg appeared. He did NOT blast it…but it also vanished! Was this supposed to be the Ashes of Alar?? If not, what was it and why has it suddenly begun appearing? If so, why didn’t either of us have it in our inventory when the battle ended? Thanks for your feedback!!
The mount is just a drop off the dead boss.
The egg is just a fight mechanic that is dropped by a phoenix. it contains a killable mob. If you don’t kill it, it will eventually disappear and respawn again during the fight if it goes long enough.
I don’t remember a phoenix-and-egg fight in the TK raid (“The Eye”, where Kael’thas allegedly drops that mount). There is one of those when you face Kael again (after his mere setback) in Magister’s Terrace, but the only mount available there is the white hawkstrider.
It doesn’t appear in every fight. I farmed the mount for a couple of months on a half dozen toons and some fights had it, some didn’t. there were a couple of other mechanics to the fight that only seemed to show up intermittently.
It did show up in the fight where I finally got the mount on this account and I always killed it when it appeared but the fact that is was in the fight didn’t seem to matter.
On my other account, it never showed up in the fight that dropped the mount.
In both fights, the mount dropped from the boss, not the egg.
It [the egg and accompanying phoenix] were indeed mechanics in the base fight, but they’re only really relevant if you spend any real amount of time on the encounter. The idea was to kite the phoenix (which shares the same model as the Ashes mount) until it “burned out” and turned into an egg, at which point you have to kill the egg or it gets reborn. When the egg dies or the encounter is completed, however, it simply despawns - like adds in pretty much every boss fight.
If you failed to kill the egg fast enough you could wind up with multiple active phoenix, creating a cascading problem. This of course is almost a non-issue to a 120 given how little damage they’ll be doing, so you could have several active phoenix if you really want.
With the speed at which a single player can complete the encounter at maximum level, however, the mechanic is all but meaningless. If it happens or not doesn’t make any difference to the chance of getting the mount.
Ashes of Alar drops from the final boss. You don’t have to kill the other stuff. It’s 1% chance each time you kill Kael. Nothing affects the drop rate, and there’s nothing else you have to do aside from kill that final boss.
Took me about 200 tries to get it.
I’ve tried at least 80 or 90 times and still nothing. Every Tuesday like clockwork all my toons give it a try… Sigh. Very frustrating.
That was the first time I’d seen it, and I’d really hoped it was the Ashes but something just glitched. Well, thanks for letting me know!
Just for sour grapes - it’s a horrible mount to use. Those ribbon streamers coming off its wings really interfere with your vision while flying.
Good luck!
You’ll get it if you keep trying, I guarantee it.
